Friday, May 28, 2010: Calling for Ice Cream Delivery

He stood at a gas station. It was daylight. There were cars and people filling up their cars with gas.

He felt bewildered, not knowing where he was. He was talking on a cell phone to a woman. He was asking her about ice cream delivery. She asked him where he needed the ice cream delivered to. He looked around for street signs, but didn't see any. He asked others where he was, but they did not tell him.

Thursday, April 08, 2010: Black and White Cat

He found himself in an apartment that was not his own. There were many other people in the apartment. He moved from the kitchen into the living room.

A black and white cat began harassing him: scratching him, biting him, trying to climb up his clothes.

He asked the cat, "Are you hungry?" and tried to bring the cat over to his food dish in the kitchen. But instead, the cat continued to harass him.

His dog appeared, and the cat began to harass both of them. He tried to keep the cat and dog separated.

For a brief moment, the cat turned into a middle-aged Hispanic woman. She spoke in English on a cell phone. Then she turned back into a cat and resumed harassing them.

Finally, he picked up his dog and escaped outside.

His wife was there.

They sat together under a gazebo. Suddenly, black and white birds flew down, then black and white cats with wings flew down; then rabbits and other small animals with wings flew down.

"Look at them!" he laughed.

Thursday, April 01, 2010: The Devil

He died.

He stood outside, looking down at his body on the ground. In a moment, he found himself inside a dark stone building. He stood in a waiting room before an open door. After a short wait, a secretary said that the devil would see him now.

He walked into the room and sat down. The devil was sitting behind a desk, flanked by two secretaries. The devil appeared to be a well-dressed, mannered white-haired man with a beard. The devil greeted him, and began to review his life and ask him questions, while the secretaries took notes or presented factual documents.

One question was, "How many acts of selfless love did you commit?" He wasn't sure. One of the secretaries handed the devil a paper, and he said, "I see here that you have committed nine acts of selfless love during your life. Well done."

There was no sense of a trial, condemnation, or judgment. It was a review of his life. This place, too, was not one of punishment. He was sure this was hell, but it was organized, structured, purposeful, elegant; it was a bureaucracy, devoid of any negative elements associated with bureaucracy.

At the conclusion of the review, the devil said, without menace or guile, that he had a job for a man like him.

Tuesday, January 20, 2009: The Race

He was in a department store filled with toys and candy. Many children and parents gathered for games. He was participating in a race. He stood at the starting line along with three other racers, all female, and one was a child. The track was short, no more than several paces. The lines for each racer were not evenly spaced. Another racer tried to change this. But he pointed out that this was normal. Oh, the other racer said. The starter stepped up to the side of the track. The track had shrunk to a few paces. He got set. The starter quietly mumbled, Go. He ran, practically leaping the distance. Another racer was close to the finish line, but he crossed first. She turned to him and said in a dazed tone, You won. He looked back, and one of the racers had not even left the starting line. She just stood there in shock.

Thursday, August 21, 2008: A kiss

The dreamer found himself sitting in the passenger seat of a dusty powder blue classic pickup truck. The driver was a beautiful woman. Together they drove slowly down a long country road between green grassy fields under a cloudless blue sky.

She pulled the truck into a gravel clearing and turned the engine off. She leaned forward, he leaned forward, reaching with gentle hands touching neck and shoulders, with eyes closed, for a few seconds they kissed, then looked into each others eyes, brow to brow, and then the dreamer woke up.

Wednesday, May 21, 2008: Three women

Off the main road, a path of gravel opened upon a clearing. Under a sunny blue sky, three women sat in a convertible car. A man offered the women to him. The three women all had red hair. One was younger, one was older, one was oldest. He chose the younger.

Tuesday, May 13, 2008: Spiders

He walked head-first through a mass of spider webs, while dragging a heavy object out of a small tin-roofed shed. But he did not pause or panic, and finished dragging the object outside.

The day was sunny and the sky was blue with a few small drifting white clouds. He examine himself: he was covered with spider webs. He shook and pulled thick strands of sticky webbing from his hair and arms and clothing. Small white spiders were crawling on him; he brushed them off.

He lifted the heavy object again and brought it to the corner of Pilgrim and Hamilton, to a yard sale. Now and again, he would find another spider crawling on him. He left the yard sale to clean himself off.

He went into a large house. In his suite, he found some fresh clothes and a towel, and he prepared to take a shower. He paused as he spied a young woman through a crack in a door that led into an adjacent room. She sat down at a table to eat breakfast.

Monday, May 05, 2008: Treading water, college dorms

They clung to the balconies of tall buildings for as long as they could. But eventually, the waters rose above the buildings, and they were forced to tread water. He and some others began to swim towards what appeared to be an island in the distance, but somebody warned them that carnivorous fish circled that island. So they turned back and swam in a different direction.

In a different dream, he was returning to college. He arrived early with a few belongings: some clothes, notebooks of poetry, a few books. He and the early arrivals chose a spacious, attractive, clean dorm near the front of the building on the first floor.

Then the late arrivals came. And a voice of authority forced him and the other early arrivals out of the dorm and rush back to try and claim a space. It was not fair, he thought, gathering up his possessions again. He and the others had lost the nice dorm, and were forced upstairs to less attractive, less clean dorms further from the building entrance.

He grabbed a clean towel from a co-ed shower, trying to be as discrete as possible.

He noticed that an older student was on the student roster, which sounded promising.

A witch met him along the way. She gave him her business card and exited as he waved goodbye to her.

Finally, he found an empty bed in a crowded dorm on one of the uppermost floors, full of loud frat boys. He put his possessions down and threw himself on the bed.

Sunday, May 04, 2008: Masks, roads, and the chapel of everything

He stood with his wife on a pier before a vast sea. Above the sea hovered masks with different expressions. The masks wanted them to join with them. But together, they kept the masks at bay.

Later, they walked. They found themselves at crossroads going in all directions. It was night, but there was sufficient light from street lamps to see where they were going. His wife pointed and suggested a road. He turned to look at the road, and saw that it was steep, unpaved, and rough. He said that it was likely the road to take. And they began to climb the road.

They came upon a small chapel in the woods and entered. The interior was white and softly lit. They intuited that this chapel served no particular religion, denomination, path, way, world view or system of belief. A young scholarly woman served here. She stopped us from entering the next room, as a service was in progress. She let us know that if there was anything she could do for us, to let her know and she would help us.

Sunday, April 27, 2008: Hunter

He walked along ancient roads, through cities of long past, seeking out men and women whose passions and ambitions and the worship from others had crystallized in them something more than human. They had become gods, haunting cyclopean palace chambers; striding and strutting, demanding and destroying; beautiful, graceful, intellectual, powerful beyond human possession, and entirely mad.

He was nobody.

He saw through their wondrous and terrible mien, which flowed like fire and water and gold and sky. He broke through the spell that put men under their sway, and brought their reigns to an end.

He pursued one of them through darkness along a red path: a road, a river, a rivulet of molten earth. There was a break in the path. He leaped the gap towards his foe and landed in a stream. The stream cooled him and he broke the surface.

But his foe had eluded him. A stone fish lay on the shore of an unfamiliar sunlit villa. He walked into the villa, searching for a native to ask directions. Over a low wall, he saw a young woman. She wore a short red diaphanous dress. Her hair was red gold curls gathered up to bare her long slender neck. He approached her. There was nothing imperfect about her. She appeared to him coy but receptive. But he realized the great, great temptation she represented, and he woke himself up.

Monday, April 07, 2008: Mechanical Hell

I had a dream that I saw a rectangular opening in the sidewalk. It was two feet wide, six feet long, and four feet deep. At the bottom was an opening. Rainwater flowed into the crack. Steam and smoke rose from the opening. A woman nearby warned me that it was an opening into hell.

I was foolishly curious, so I bent down and lay on my side to get a better angle to look through the opening at the bottom. And I fell into the hole.

I rolled onto a descending conveyor belt that was covered in what appeared to be lint, dust, or hair. The air was damp and smoky.

After riding this conveyor belt down for some distance and time, I reached a level place, and long rectangular room with more conveyor belts moving in different directions.

During this pause, a coworker appeared. His head and face were enormous. He asked me a question, and I insisted that I no longer handled that function; ask so-and-so about it. He left with his big head in a huff.

I crawled along a horizontal conveyor belt to a screen door. The door was flimsy but latched shut. I looked through the screen. I could see a vast abyss beyond the screen, dark and burning. There was a din of voices, and a deep commanding voice. A demon landed and clung to a perch just outside the screen door. He was naked. He had wings and claws. He appeared to have no eyes; he appeared to have ear holes and nose slits; he had a mouth of sharp teeth. He appeared to be made out of scar tissue.

Quite foolishly, I waved my hand at this demon, to see if he could see me. He looked at me. I realized what I had done, and I woke myself up.

Sunday, March 16, 2008: Power in the blood

I had a dream that my wife and I were at a lavish outdoor party on the patio of a mansion. The hostess was an Egyptian woman. She poured drinks for us from an alabaster jar into our glass goblets. The wine was golden, clear and sparkling. My wife and I drank it. When we spoke again, I noticed that my wife had long incisors. This did not frighten me at all.

I entered the mansion and found a dark chamber where captives were slaughtered mechanically and drained of their blood.

Wednesday, March 12, 2008: Missiles, Ladders

I had a dream that missiles were flying, one by one, across a dark sky. The first missile fell on a distant target, the second a closer target, the third a closer target. I took cover, prone on gravel, between a concrete barricade and two cars, both shiny classic vehicles, one blue and the other orange.

In the next dream, I was with my wife, one of her old roommates, possibly others. We were in vast, dark, concrete building full of black ladders and conveyor belts. I had a stack of red books with me that I carried up a ladder. Somebody mentioned a lever (pronouncing it leh-vur); I jokingly corrected them and pronounced it lee-vur.

A common element in both dreams was the knowledge that I could travel between worlds, and that the first dream was one world and the second dream was another world.

Thursday, February 21, 2008: Race

I had a dream that I was in a race. We lined up, young and old, men and women. When the race started, many rushed ahead of me. I was in last place. But I was conserving my energy and kept a steady pace.

As the race went on, I passed some prizes along the way. Other racers stopped to grab the prizes. But I ignored them.

At the last lap, with a sudden surge of speed, I passed old and young, men and women. I reached out for the ribbon and grasped it. Though nobody else took notice, I had won the race.

Thursday, February 07, 2008: Fighting a dragon, dog injured and healed, suicide

Together, we were fighting a monster in a dark place. The monster was lit with flickering blue and violet flames.

During the fight, I found my dog, injured on the ground. His jaw was broken; he was in pain. I took a towel and wrapped him in it to carry him off to a vet. But I looked down in the towel, and he was completely healthy.

I was in a parking lot at night with several coworkers. I was standing with one coworker talking. Suddenly, as we looked beyond a fence, a woman jumped from a high brick building and died; I recognized her as yet another coworker. We were shocked and saddened.

Saturday, February 02, 2008: Car on fire

I had a dream that I was sitting in the backseat of a blue Chevy Malibu [my first car] at night, while a coworker drove the car, and her daughter sat in the front passenger seat. We dropped off her daughter, but as we were driving by, I could see flames licking from under the hood. I told her to stop the car and get out; it was on fire!

Sunday, January 27, 2008: Trip to the country

Matt, his older brother and I drove in a white car to a rural town. After parking the car, we parted ways.

I met a girl. She seemed to know me, or at least, she was interested in me, and friendly. She had long wavy brown hair, dark brown eyes, a light coffee complexion, full lips; her blouse and jeans fit her curvy figure. As we walked, she put her arm around me, hugged me, and kissed me. She brought me to her workplace, a home goods store, and introduced me to her coworkers. I jokingly put a square of plastic turf on my head before we departed; it was her day off.

We walked to a county fair. We looked around, and ate some food. A small swarm of beetles, joined by a long strand of material, flew at me and wrapped itself from my arm. It felt very irritating. She said that they were called bracelet beetles. I carefully peeled these bracelet beetles from my arm and tossed them away.

We drove back in her black sports car to the parking lot where Matt and his brother were waiting. His brother backed the car dangerously close to the edge of a cliff. I swore at him. He got mad. Matt calmed us down. We drove home.

Friday, January 25, 2008: Basement apartment, great white cat, man who was a dragon

My wife and I were sleeping in a basement apartment. A friend of our son came knocking at the window, to invite him to play basketball. I said through the window that he was not up yet.

We got out of bed and walked outside. There was a long row of garage doors for parking cars and tenant storage. I spotted a very large white feline. It was trying to get back into a pet carrier that the animal outgrew. A woman came over to the cat and was walking it like a pet. But it was obviously an albino great cat and not a house cat. This made us worry.

We turned around and there was an airplane terminal, letting passengers off.

In a different dream, I found myself in an expansive gray room, filled with strange metal furniture. A man who was a dragon slowly pursued me around the room. Sometimes, I would distract him by drawing his attention to a particularly fine piece of furniture. I cast spells at him and kept my distance until at last, right before he was upon me, he fell and vanished.

Friday, January 04, 2008: The office, books

In the office, coworkers were taking down Christmas decorations and replacing them with April Fools Day decorations. We walked in on a meeting, led by a woman in a gray business suit, as it was about to begin, and just as quickly, it ended.

I way lying in bed. A pile of books next to the bed spelled out the answer. But I was too asleep to understand it.

Saturday, December 22, 2007: Lucid exercise, whirling dervishes, and jamming

I tried a lucid dream inducing technique last night, one that I had not tried for years. Basically, before going to sleep, you remind yourself that when you see your hands in a dream, that your hands will remind you that you are in a dream. So I tried it and it worked.

[As I observed myself drift off to sleep,] I found myself in a hotel corridor. I looked at my hands to remind myself that I was dreaming, and it worked. As a demonstration, I intentionally kissed each woman I met as I walked down the hall. I reached the elevator, but the doors had closed. A man was standing outside the elevator. I said to him, Want to see a neat trick? I pressed the elevator button. The doors opened, and the elevator car was present, even though it had apparently departed. I got into the elevator. A woman was standing in the elevator with me. I pressed the down button. Then I kissed her.

At this point, I relenquished lucid control over the dream, and let it flow by itself.

I entered a very large room. A man with a shaven head and an upturned moustache was observing. He was observing dancers, dancing a dance that appeared to be whirling combined with tai chi. He saw me, and we nodded at each other.

I woke up, then went back to sleep.

A dark-skinned man with dreadlocks and a guitar invited me to jam with him in a parking lot. I picked up a guitar. It took me a few tried, but eventually, I learned the song he was playing.

Monday, December 17, 2007: Sartre, Kung Fu

Half-formed dreams of words and concepts from Sartre’s Being and Nothingness floated through my head for most of the night.

I was reading Sartre before bed. Bad idea.

After my thoughts settled down, I dreamed of a gathering of my old gaming group. I snapped photos of the upper right quarter of their faces. I asked them if they wanted to be in a movie. They enthusiastically agreed.

We ran, filmed by an unseen crew, through a movie set that seemed to be constructed solely from wood paneling. Martial artist thugs pursued us. We exited the building onto a large patio. We were stopped by a boss-man flanked by two Asian women dressed in black, brandishing swords, his bodyguards. He invited us to enjoy the party. There was a pool and an outdoor kitchen. I turned on the grill.

Wednesday, October 24, 2007: Marble House, Sick Pet

Last night, I had a dream that my wife and I were touring the home of a strange woman. Each room had marble floors, or marble pillars, or marble walls, or intricate tiles. It looked beautiful and expensive. She showed us one room that was unfinished; it was painted light green.

In another dream, I was sitting in the kitchen, examining my dog. He was dirty and infested with worms.

In real life, my dog is sick. I woke at least four times last night to walk him. But he does not appear to have worms.

Friday, October 12, 2007: Class Room Anxiety

I sat in a chair at the front-middle desk of a cramped and dim classroom. I wore a dull green winter coat, a gray wool hat, a dark blue scarf, black gloves, and black boots. I arranged a heavy load of books and a backpack on my desk and under my chair. I thought that I must stand out; not only was I encumbered more than my fellow students, but I was also the only adult in a classroom of teenagers. The teacher spoke up; she reminded me of my high school French teacher, a large, pale, light-haired old woman. She told us to begin our assignments.

I shuffled through a stack of mimeographed papers. Upon examination, the assignment seemed to be a comic strip about aliens, written in their language. But there were no blanks to fill. The teacher, to clarify, held up a copy of the assignment; it was a different one that I was looking at. I shuffled through my papers again and found the correct assignment, which had a lot of blank space for writing, and appeared to be a geometry assignment, with diagrams of circles and triangles. But as I was writing my name at the top of the page, the teacher said to hand them in.

As I handed her my incomplete assignment, she said that my mother had called to ask if she needed to pick me up at 6:45. I thought for a moment and said yes, though in the back of my mind, I wondered how she was going to pick me up, because she was dead.

Thursday, October 04, 2007: On Hamilton Street

I had a dream that I was standing on Hamilton Street, observing an elderly gay couple with a penchant for pranks. One of them had fallen asleep behind the wheel of his parked car. The other started the car and put it in drive. The car drove slowly down the street, the driver still asleep.

I walked down Hamilton Street and encountered a genetic giant couple, a blond woman and a dark haired man. I asked them questions, but I do not remember what the questions were, or the answers.

I entered the rear passenger side door of a futuristic-looking silver car and sat down. The car started by itself and steered down the street, apparently on autopilot.

Thursday, August 16, 2007: Levitation

I sat in the lotus position as I floated two feet above the sidewalk. It was a beautiful, clear day. Two fat ladies chatted on my left and my right as I glided slowly towards my house. Suddenly, a black cat crossed my path. I ‘clothes-lined’ the cat with my forearm, pushing it out of my way.

Sunday, August 05, 2007: Downhill Race

I was outside my house, walking my silky terrier. The sky was overcast, and there were piles of brown leaves on the ground. The fence surrounding my house was rusted and broken; one section was closed off with a propped-up wooden fence. I chased my dog around the back of the house, and the properties of my neighbors had changed. There was a lot of grass, trees, and shrubs; also, an entire apartment had vanished. An old friend of mine, Stewart, was sitting on the grass, petting a cat. In another yard, a young brunette woman in a black dress was speaking to a person I could not see.

I started walking down my street. I found myself moving down the city streets on foot, other times by bus, sometimes with wuxia-style leaps through the air, and once, through a pizza parlor, but always downhill, faster and faster.

As I picked up speed, I also acquired followers. My sister, my mother, my aunts, my grandmother, eventually bystanders. We were speeding towards White City, a shopping center across a bridge. At the height of speed, I grabbed onto the hips of a roller-blading young blonde woman in a white bikini and zoomed off.

Sunday, May 20, 2007: New Club, New Home, John Updike, Kramer

I was invited to a club opening. I arrived early, and sat in a dark corner, alone. Several homeless people sat nearby, here for the free alcohol. I asked a waitress about mixed drinks, explaining that I never drank anything but wine. She brought me a glass of red wine, and I sat, sipping it.

The club filled quickly. A man asked me if I should be drinking wine. They asked if my religion permitted it. They said that if I did not know, that I should ask a religious leader if it is permitted. I said that I did not believe in religions that required one to ask another what their own conscience should tell them.

I dreamed that I was living in a new house. The house contained a menagerie of animals. At bedtime, I herded the animals into a single room, and closed the gate. As I got into bed, I noticed that my wife was sleeping on a different side.

I had a dream that the author John Updike was showing me around his house. It was full of books. He was searching for a particular collection of stories he wished to lend me.

Finally, I dreamed that Kramer, from the TV show Seinfeld, was loudly humming a song, whose lyrics, should his companions recognize the song, would inform them about a person at another table.

Saturday, May 05, 2007: Cellar, Buddha, Flying Things, Weird Wedding, and Car Accident

I descended stairs to a long dark basement. I pulled open two metal drawers, brimming with water. Slowly, what low lighting there was dimmed to darkness. I could only feel my way back upstairs.

My sister told me that my room was to the right. I took a right at the stairs. The stairs forked and spiraled off in all directions. I climbed a high step to the right into a room. The room was small. The walls were painted orange. Against the walls were pieces of lacquered furniture. I could make out a fuzzy reflection of myself in one tall piece. I step out of the room.

Suddenly, everything is dark again. A huge smiling face made of terracotta fills my left field of vision. It speaks, “I am the Buddha.” I reply, “You are not the Buddha. You pretend to be the Buddha.” Suddenly, I have a vision of a crying child made of the same orange clay, pinned to the ground by a single large hand.

In another dream, I am in my driveway, holding a stick, swatting at small red flying creatures. They are a cross between pterodactyls and insects. I hit both of them, and they fall dead.

In another dream, I am at the wedding of my cousin. It is colorful, and juvenile, and we sing children’s songs.

In my final dream, I am driving with an acquaintance in an SUV. She steers poorly, and we end up backing over another car while parking.

Friday, April 20, 2007: Henry Rollins, Vermont Vacation, Crazy Shrew

I was walking up my street when I saw Henry Rollins. I told him that I was a fan of his since Black Flag. I said that I approved of his career choices, and felt that he had in no way “sold out”. He thanked me, and said that he was happy with the choices he had made, too. He said that Alice Cooper was going to be on his show soon. He got into a van that came equipped with a full bath, said to call him sometime. I waved goodbye and walked back to my house.

Next, I dreamed that my wife and I were vacationing in Vermont. We were staying in a college dorm. We only had one day left to our vacation, and we were deciding which restaurant would be the last. We settled on the Trattoria Delia. There was a knock at the door. I opened the door, and a group of college students were standing there. They dismantled the door. I said that they must be mechanical engineers.

In my final dream, I was observing a newlywed couple. They were parked near an aquarium. The husband walked away to do some errands. The wife proceeded to fill up their truck with water from a hose, hit golf balls into the glass of the aquarium, and even jumped into the tank and swam up and down with the fish. When he came back from his errands, she got very angry with him over a trifle, and shrieked that she would put her golf club through his skull. At this, his eyes began to open to her lunacy. He noticed a golf ball embedded in the glass of the tank, and touched it with his fingers thoughtfully.

I could discern a feminine silhouette, lying still in the dark, eyes open and unblinking, lips apart and teeth showing slightly. This person next to me might have been dead. Saturday, January 20, 2007: Black Books, Foreperson, Mantra, Mirror

While browsing a comic book store, I came across three books with black covers. They were a set of graphic novels, written and illustrated by Eric Willand. [Eric was an acquaintance I made back in high school. I had admired his artwork.] I purchased the three black books.

Later, I dreamed about an female Asian foreman. She was shouting at two truck drivers, “Stop, you’re mixing them!”

I dreamed of a mantra, “Money, energy, matter, and time.”

I dreamed that I was purposefully gazing into a mirror, because I was thinking to myself about the nature of mirrors in dreams. When I looked into the mirror, I could only see a small portion of my face, whichever I was focused on.

Friday, January 19, 2007: President Favor, Strange Ritual

An old friend of mine, Stewart, was walking with me on Hamilton Street. We were meeting with the president. Apparently, he owed Stewart a favor. A black limousine pulled up next to us at a bus stop. President Bush stepped out of the vehicle. He appeared to be very distracted, as he has urgent business elsewhere. Stewart explained that he needed his help to take revenge on somebody. The president asked why he wanted revenge. Stewart said that he couldn't remember.

In another dream, I was with a group that was infiltrating a castle at night. We subdued any guards we came upon. We found ourselves in strange chapel. Two women appeared, one dressed in brightly colored clothes, the other dressed in dark clothes. They told me to lie down on what appeared to be a hospital bed. I asked them why. A black dwarf told me to shut up and just lie down. When I looked back at the two women, they had merged into one person, half dressed in bright and dark clothing.

Saturday, December 02, 2006: White Room of Cats, Apartment

I was living in a large house. I explored the basement. I found some strangely shaped heat radiators. After that, I found a golden curtained glass wall. I opened the curtain. Beyond the curtain was a white room. I marvelled that I found a white room here. As I peered into the room, I saw that there was a glass wall on the other side, and a door that opened to a lawn. At least a dozen cats came into the room. I thought to myself, “How am I going to get rid of all of these cats?”

I had a dream that I was in a bookstore with some friends: Bob, William, and William's father.

I had a dream that I was moving very quickly along a road, with a view of grass, trees, streams, and ponds.

Finally, I had a dream that my family was living in a third floor apartment. We found that the second floor apartment was unoccupied, so we explored it. The walls were covered with brown paper. The walls themselves, in some places, were very soft, as if they had nothing beneath them but insulation material. In the kitchen were large heating vents.

We went to a bank to take out a mortgage. The bank agent was a middle-age woman with brown hair and glasses. As we were talking to her, I wondered why we were taking out a mortgage on an apartment.

Friday, November 24, 2006: Superhero, Hospital, College

I was a superhero, standing in a line with other superheroes, waiting to be allowed to enter a city of superheroes. I wore a costume, but I did not have a mask. I searched for a suitable mask, but I only found mexican wrestler masks. As I entered the city, a costumed woman handed me a list of rules to follow. The city was futuristic in appearance, with escalators and moving walkways, glass, steel, concrete, and bright lights. It was teeming with caped and costumed superheroes. I explained to a friend that this place was like the Justice League.

In another dream, I was in a hospital. I was slowly pacing a room with a doctor. The room was clean, with light blue tile and curtains. The doctor looked like M Night Shyamalan. He described the procedure to me in a calm voice. He also spoke to a woman who would be assisting him, listing the surgical instruments that he would require. The procedure involved operating on my chest. The nurse asked if my chest would need to be shaved.

In my last dream, I returned to college. In a classroom and in the halls, I saw my brother and many highscool friends. I walked into a cooking class; the teacher was Emeril Lagasse. As I walked around the class, speaking with Emeril, I stretched a piece of dough into a pizza. I apologized to Emeril for missing his class, explained that I was sick, and asked if there was any makeup work or tests. He said not to worry about it. I searched the classroom for a pizza stone, but I could not find one. All I could find was more dough, in various shapes and stages.

Wednesday, November 22, 2006: Propositions

Twice, I propositioned a petite dark-haired woman. I failed the first time and succeeded the second time. If I recall correctly, this was in a rather public place.

This woman has appeared in other dreams; I think Jung would consider her my anima.

Saturday, November 04, 2006: Game Room Preparations

My gaming friends were gathered in my house. My house appeared to be a mix of all of the apartments and houses I have lived in before. The windows in the large dining room needed repair. I pried nails out of the window frames that did not belong. There was a cold breeze blowing in through one window.

Will and I were discussing the short story I was writing. He said he could not determine the time period of the story. I said that detail was intentionally vague. I asked him if he knew where the story was set. He said he thought it was somewhere in the Middle East. I told him that was correct, and that is what I intended also.

We went to Musicquest, a music/comic/gaming store in our neighborhood. We flipped through RPG books.

We walked down Dartmouth Street, and came across a couple with three dogs: a large dog, a medium dog, and a small dog. The large dog appeared threatening and dangerous. The small dog appeared to be injured, as if somebody had stepped on it. We left the dogs quickly; it seemed like a bad situation.

Back at the apartment, I found two Stimpy keychains and two Stimpy plush toys near some stairs. An old church friend, Mike, appeared.

Separate from these dreams, I had a sex dream. My partner and I were trying to find a place to hide in a house full of people, so we hid in a pantry. Still, we found we couldn’t be alone for long.

Also separate from these dreams, I saw six elderly men sitting in chairs, waiting to dine in a restaurant. “Frickin’ fish,” one of them said. Another chided him, “Don’t say frickin’ fish.”

My dream frequency and recall is much better on the weekend, when I get to sleep longer.

Will and I both write and have discussed our writing in real life. The short story we were discussing is a story I am actually writing now.

There is a strong association with Mike and Stimpy; we were both big fans of The Ren & Stimpy Show.

My gaming group hasn’t gathered in a long time, and I do miss them. As I miss all of the places I have lived before.

Saturday, October 21, 2006: Duet, Toughs, Needles, a Train, and a Moose

I was walking in the middle of the street in an urban area in bright daylight. I passed a college campus. A young woman joined me on my walk. She started singing, and I joined her singing.

As we continued walking and singing, night fell. We stopped singing. We turned down a street. We passed a news stand, and then the street came to a dead end. I noticed that the young woman was no longer with me. I could not find her. At the end of the street were a gang of children, six or seven of them, no older than twelve. One of them looked like Malcolm David Kelley. I asked them if they had seen the young woman who was with me. They laughed, and surrounded me. They grabbed me by my arms and legs, but I shook them off.

In a separate dream, I was walking on a road again, at night. I fell on an open box of acupuncture needles. I lifted myself up, and found several dozen needles sticking out of my left elbow and right knee. As I pulled them out, one by one, some nearby people laughed. I said it wasn't funny.

I also dreamed I was in a brightly lit mall of gleaming metal, glass, and white plastic. I stood at the top of an escalator. I was writing something down, and talking with a man who was standing nearby. I dropped the pen on the escalator, but quickly fetched it. The man warned me of an oncoming train, and just then, along a narrow pair of shiny metal rails, a mini-train passed us, carrying a single passenger per car.

In my last dream, I was standing on a snowy hillside. I saw Royal Canadian Mounted Police standing around in the snow, looking at something. I approached where they were standing, to see what they were looking at. A moose was lying in the snow. It appeared to be dead. I asked if it was dead, but I saw it lift its head slightly, then drop its head back into the snow. The mounted police sang a sad low song for the moose. They said that it was a traditional song they sung for fallen mounties, and that all moose are considered honorary mounties. All but one of the mounties rode off to get help. I asked the officer who was still there if the moose was injured; I could not see if the moose was hurt or sick.

Saturday, September 23, 2006: Nuclear

I was in a house that I felt was my home, but looked different than my current house. I went down into the basement. It was finished in honey-colored wood and the lighting was pleasant. I was looking for my daughter; apparently, her room was in the basement. But she was not there. I opened a door and discovered a new room. In the room was a dark-haired young woman. She was sitting on a chair or the edge of a bed. I sat down on the floor in front of her. As she spoke, rising around and above her was a brilliant orange mushroom cloud. It was as if I could see it through the house.

Monday, October 17, 2005: End of the World

I was walking along a sidewalk. I was driven by an inner voice, or a memory of an inner voice, a prophetess in my head. The voice told me to go to a certain place.

As I traveled, the voice told me that as a sign, I would come across a great rift. As I walked along the sidewalk, I saw that ahead of me was a deep chasm. On the bridge that crossed the chasm was a girl who was struggling to walk a german shepherd. She didn’t appear friendly to me, so I quickly moved on.

I came upon a house. A woman was selling Halloween ornaments that her gifted daughter had made. I examined them; they were excellent sculptures of white ghosts. As I was offering to buy them, I realized, by the voice, that the world was coming to an end.

I told the woman about this; she asked how I knew, and I told her it was a gift. She revealed that her daughter was similarly gifted, and that as for herself, she was both a scientist and a witch. She said that a meteor was approaching, a planet killer.

We watched from a window overlooking the city as the sun was blotted out and the sky grew black. The stars were radiant, and an ominous shadow tumbled against them.

Together, we tried a ritual of science and magic to turn the meteor away from us. She wore a colorful costume and danced in a circle of lights. I focused my attention upon a screen, with pinpoints of lights upon it. The lights clustered and dispersed as I concentrated upon them.

But the ritual failed. We knew intuitively that her daughter opposed us and caused the ritual to fail.

Wednesday, June 29, 2005: White Mansion, Storm, Dancers

I was with my family and friends in a mansion that had a white interior and large windows. As I looked out one window, I saw a storm swirling above a hilltop. A funnel cloud began to form. I warned everybody to go to the basement. But suddenly, the clouds began to disperse, from west to east, as if an invisible force swept them away. I looked out another window shortly after, and I could see a clear night sky. A man and a woman dressed in white were dancing up on the window.

Tuesday, April 19, 2005: Church, Big Cats, Bus and Champagne

My wife, my children and I were at a church function. The church members were proselytizing very aggressively. I responded in kind by adamantly refusing and refuting their doctrine.

Later, we found ourselves in a house. We were being entertained by an eccentric man, perhaps a rock star. He had two pet lions. One lion was trying to eat the other, which agitated our host.

Finally, we were waiting on Hamilton Street for a bus traveling downtown. The bus stopped, and we boarded it. The driver was an Asian woman. She appeared to be upset. She explained that this was a special celebration bus with champagne on it, but nobody was drinking it. In fact, there was nobody else on the bus but us. As we walked towards the back of the bus, past rows of hospital beds, we sat down, opened the crates, and drank some champagne.

Wednesday, November 10, 2004: Accident, Decay, Rooftop

Sitting in the backseat of a co-worker's car, in a parking lot at night. There was snow on the ground. As we were pulling out of the parking lot, we accidentally ran over the leg of a woman who fell near the car. Everything was moving slowly.

In another dream, I was in my house. I went into the bathroom. When I flushed the toilet, the toilet sunk through the wooden floor, which seemed waterlogged, spongey, and decayed. The water draining through the holes in the floor reminded me of seawater sinking into bubbling holes in beach sand.

In my last dream, I was walking with a friend in a strange neighborhood during the day. Colorful houses sat atop green hills. I climbed onto one of the rooftops of a house and discovered that I could not get down.

Tuesday, November 09, 2004: Playhouse

I was in a red brick church-like playhouse. It reminded me of St. Stephen's Church on Grafton Street. In front of me, was Zoe Wanamaker. She had white hair, and was singing a song called “I Smell?” After the song was over, an old woman wearing a dark red leather cloak came down from the stage and told me to follow her. I followed her downstairs, to a dark, open space. The stairs spiraled down to a small brick house in the midst of the vast darkness. I descended.

The association of the playhouse with St. Stephen's Church goes beyond mere appearance. There is a sense of space, that in my mind, this place is the same place as the church, without actually being the church.

I had watched My Family on BBC America that evening; Zoe Wanamaker plays the mother in that series.

Thursday, September 16, 2004: Office

I was in a large office. The ceilings were high, the furniture was made of a dark wood. The carpeting was dark, too. There were large bookshelves and desks without cubicles. I picked up a financial magazine, which said that my company was growing more successful. There was a woman with a new iMac on her desk, instead of a PC.

Monday, August 16, 2004: Mall, Old Friend and Poetry

I was in a large department store or shopping mall. The roof leaked. In the mall, I saw some security guards. And I saw two girls from Rich Girls. Or they could have been Edina and Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous?

I had a very positive dream about my old friend Will. He was living in a large apartment. Everything was painted white. His father was living there again, as were several other room-mates. Will was going to submit my poetry to a web site called Lovegods.com, or Lovegods.org, or something like that.

I checked the web sites and they don't exist, beyond some kind of dating serving links.

Tuesday, August 03, 2004: Apartments

I was standing across the street from a pair of three-story apartments, sitting on an open plain. The apartments had flat roofs and were constructed, if you had a bird’s-eye view, to resemble the letter W. The house on the left was yellow; the house on the right was white. By way of color, position, and height, the apartment on the right resembled my childhood home on Dartmouth Street, and the apartment on the left resembled... the apartment to the left of my childhood home. Because the apartments were on an open plain, I felt nervous about approaching tornados, though there wasn't a cloud in sight.

A woman was selling the yellow house. It seems I had already bought the white house. “If I had the money,” I thought, “I would buy both houses.”

As I examined the house, I discovered that the basement ceiling was very low, and I was able to move the floorboards overhead. The upper interior of the house had a wide open space with heavy, movable wrought-iron stairs, platforms, and even stranger structures, one of which I think was a folding cube.

My father, brother, uncles, and my father’s (now deceased) dog were in the house. As Bandit, my father’s dead dog approached me, I felt apprehensive, because I knew that, in real life, the dog was dead.

In another dream I had, I was in a hotel bed. I had a cold. My nose was very runny. I blew my nose frequently and put the tissues on the floor next to the bed. Steve (Jack Davenport) and Susan (Sarah Alexander) from the BBC TV show Coupling were in the bed next to me, arguing.

I had a dream that I was living in a first-floor studio of an apartment complex. A young black man outside my window was complaining about how loud my music was.

I had a dream that I was reading RPG review online, something that I was doing frequently last night.

Finally, in the last dream I remember, I was talking to a small latino boy and his family. He had a black pet that could talk, though I can’t remember if it was a cat or a dog.
