Sunday, May 23, 2010: Summoner
After stepping through the doorway, he hovered in place, within a glowing lavender expanse. He drew from himself an artifact, a round stone wider than his outstretched arms. The round stone had interlocking parts, like gears, like a puzzle.
Though he drew forth the stone from himself, the stone contested his will. By force, he overcame this opposition, and the stone opened. A glowing green-yellow light shone from within the stone, like an arcane forge. He gestured towards to opening, and from it came a black cat. The black cat leaped onto his hand, then to his shoulder.
He closed the opening in the stone, drew the stone back into himself, and stepped back into the mundane world. The cat was for somebody else.
Friday, May 21, 2010: Elements
He stood inside a stone building. Others stood around with him. Through a wide opening, they looked at the water and the light of day.
But something viscous, black, and malevolent surged within the water. It began to bulge and lift itself up through the opening. Panic spread through the others. Darkness fell. He grabbed a thick branch and climbed upstairs.
Already, the sky was black. Trees bent in the wind. He leaped into the air and flew, carried by the wind backwards and upwards. Below, savages with spears pursued him. He pointed the thick branch at them. He expected lightning to shoot out from the branch, but instead, out came a glowing green streamer of energy that remained on the air and floated down softly.
Thursday, April 08, 2010: Black and White Cat
He found himself in an apartment that was not his own. There were many other people in the apartment. He moved from the kitchen into the living room.
A black and white cat began harassing him: scratching him, biting him, trying to climb up his clothes.
He asked the cat, "Are you hungry?" and tried to bring the cat over to his food dish in the kitchen. But instead, the cat continued to harass him.
His dog appeared, and the cat began to harass both of them. He tried to keep the cat and dog separated.
For a brief moment, the cat turned into a middle-aged Hispanic woman. She spoke in English on a cell phone. Then she turned back into a cat and resumed harassing them.
Finally, he picked up his dog and escaped outside.
His wife was there.
They sat together under a gazebo. Suddenly, black and white birds flew down, then black and white cats with wings flew down; then rabbits and other small animals with wings flew down.
"Look at them!" he laughed.
Wednesday, November 04, 2009: Leeches
He walked down a cracked and pocked sidewalk along a dead-end street. Some of the holes in the sidewalk were filled with black smoking liquid. On his right was a tall fence with a hedge, and there were tall trees behind the fence, on the other side of the street, and at the end of the street. It was day, but there was only dim light because the trees shaded the dead-end road.
Others walked with him. They seemed to be searching for something. A moment came when they changed direction, away from the dead-end.
A father was looking for his son. The father said that his son told him there was something in the sidewalk. He changed direction again to show the holes in the sidewalk to the father. The holes had changed. They were filled with clear liquid, and tiny black leeches slinked and jumped out of the liquid. He and the father reacted to them by changing direction again, away from the dead-end road.
A school bus passed by. Something was wrong and people were being rescued.
Sunday, September 27, 2009: Fans, Mantis-Dogs
He was in the city at night with his wife, son, and daughter. They approached an array of cylindrical buildings topped with massive rotating fan blades. “I wonder what these look like from above,” he thought aloud. They made their way to a black mesh covered scaffolding. His wife found an opening in the mesh, and hanging from the scaffolding, dropped down to the floor below, then his daughter next, then he dropped; his son followed. The floor was smooth concrete.
He scrambled under the gray overhang of a cave riddled cliff that was covered with blankets. A giant tan-colored praying mantis dog was looking for him. He knew he had to face this threat, but he had no weapon in hand. He scrambled to the other side of the cliff-bed, and another mantis dog was waiting there as well, but as he delayed, the mantis dog grew smaller and he grew bigger until he could pat it and scratch it.
Tuesday, October 07, 2008: Carriage, horse, driver, master
A black lacquered carriage drawn by a strong brown horse rolled down the dusty street. Patrick Stewart played the master in the carriage. He lounged across the seats inside the carriage, and spoke to the driver from time to time, giving him direction.
From a nearby pub, a stumbling gang of drunks approached and surrounded the carriage. “Keep moving. Don’t slow down,” the master ordered. “Run them down if they get in the way.”
One of the men passed a mug of amber liquid up to the driver to give to the master. “Compliments of the house to the Master.”
The driver sniffed it. “It’s not piss, sir. It smells like beer.” The driver had gray mutton chop sideburns.
“Throw it away,” the master said. “No doubt it was mixed from mugs left at the bar, or else they had a round of spitting into this one.”
A little beer had spilled from the mug into a top hat inside the carriage. The master flicked the beer from the hat out a window.
Wednesday, August 13, 2008: Medusa
He stumbled out of bed into the bathroom. Dark shapes slithered behind the shower curtain. His vision dimmed until he was blind. He called out for help, but there was no answer.
He found himself back in bed. In the dark, his wife stood over him. He began to get up, and saw her face was a mass of writhing worms.
He knew he was asleep, and he tried to call out in his sleep to his wife sleeping next to him. A scratching at his leg woke him; the dog must have heard him crying out.
Monday, June 23, 2008: Night travel, morning dog walk
He was riding on a bus at night, seated near the driver. The driver was a familiar black man with white hair and moustache. The bus skidded on a patch of ice, but the driver kept control. They were heading down Lincoln Street.
Yet somehow, he found himself walking up Hamilton Street.
In the morning, he got out of bed to walk his dog. As he attached the leash to his collar, he noticed that the small silkie terrier was warm and had white gums. He thought that he was having a reaction to the shots he received at the vets office; he thought that he should return to the vets office right away.
Sunday, June 01, 2008: Stigmata
He backed towards the wall of a rapidly darkening room, his wife by his side. As everything faded to black, he stared at his left hand upon which a raw red stigmata appeared. Then there was no light, no sound, no wife, nothing to touch, no ground.
Into his right ear, a frighteningly close presence grunted, “Buh!”
He woke with goosebumps.
Sunday, May 18, 2008: Three dollars
He walked on Plantation Street, near a brick school building. A man wearing a worn tuxedo and top hat was talking to him, spouting all kinds of nonsense of great interest only to himself. Another man stood nearby, a vagrant, a drifter, a drunk, in a shabby brown coat. He looked down and saw three dollars in the gutter. He took one, and handed each of the men one dollar.
Wednesday, April 16, 2008: No one should brave the Underworld alone
He looked left and he was riding on a blue-green bus; he looked right and he was in a long white room. On the left, his wife sat across from him on the bus. On the right, his wife played a banjo and sang a song. Everybody on the bus or in the room applauded when she finished the song. He thought it was unusual that his wife was playing banjo, as she normally plays guitar.
His old friend William was in the white room; it was an apartment. There was a lot of clutter they were sorting through. Amidst the clutter, they found two tightly bundles stacks of dark gray rectangles. These were some kind of artifact they had created but forgotten, whose purpose they could no longer identify.
An old friend (who took his life many years ago) was playing guitar and singing Jesus is my Friend, which he always played tongue-in-cheek. The space he was in seemed to be like the blue-green bus only more open.
He found himself walking with a companion, underground. He was moving through a series of vaults. These vast rectangular chambers were cut from dark gray stone. He and his companion were exploring, though there was little light to see by. Suddenly, a menacing giant whose body consisted almost entirely of a large head came upon them and began to harass them. His companion said to ignore the giant and move on.
They came upon a chamber with a feature; a large crevasse in the far left corner. A violet light emanated from it. He thought perhaps this could be a way out. But he was hasty, parted with his companion, and leaped before he looked. He found himself falling into a deeper layer of this Underworld. Fortunately, he landed on a rough flat square stone. The stone hovered independent of the crevasse shelves. He rose on the stone into the air. Another man was using his will to lift him up.
You may noticed that this dream is told as a third person narrative. I am experimenting with this method to give myself a different perspective on the material.
A slight alteration has been made to the episode order: the deceased friend playing guitar happened last.
The companion in the underworld, his guidance, and powers resemble the idea of the psychopomp.
Saturday, April 05, 2008: Lost while driving in a box with my brother
I had a dream that I was driving down a road at night. I was driving in a rectangular black plastic bucket (we use them for trash receptacles). I do not know how I was steering or accelerating or braking, but I drove it somehow. My brother was on the passenger side. Once, he stood up to look over the side, and I told him to move his big rear end out of the way; he was blocking my view of the road. We were lost, so we decided to pull over to ask for directions.
Finally, without bucket or brother, dawn rose, and I found myself walking on the side of a familiar road, not too far from home. There was a bucket of food in the gutter. I was hungry and they were all wrapped in plastic. It did not seem like trash to me, rather, it seemed like somebody knew I would be stopping by that part of the road and left supplies for me along the way.
Wednesday, March 12, 2008: Missiles, Ladders
I had a dream that missiles were flying, one by one, across a dark sky. The first missile fell on a distant target, the second a closer target, the third a closer target. I took cover, prone on gravel, between a concrete barricade and two cars, both shiny classic vehicles, one blue and the other orange.
In the next dream, I was with my wife, one of her old roommates, possibly others. We were in vast, dark, concrete building full of black ladders and conveyor belts. I had a stack of red books with me that I carried up a ladder. Somebody mentioned a lever (pronouncing it leh-vur); I jokingly corrected them and pronounced it lee-vur.
A common element in both dreams was the knowledge that I could travel between worlds, and that the first dream was one world and the second dream was another world.
Sunday, January 27, 2008: Trip to the country
Matt, his older brother and I drove in a white car to a rural town. After parking the car, we parted ways.
I met a girl. She seemed to know me, or at least, she was interested in me, and friendly. She had long wavy brown hair, dark brown eyes, a light coffee complexion, full lips; her blouse and jeans fit her curvy figure. As we walked, she put her arm around me, hugged me, and kissed me. She brought me to her workplace, a home goods store, and introduced me to her coworkers. I jokingly put a square of plastic turf on my head before we departed; it was her day off.
We walked to a county fair. We looked around, and ate some food. A small swarm of beetles, joined by a long strand of material, flew at me and wrapped itself from my arm. It felt very irritating. She said that they were called bracelet beetles. I carefully peeled these bracelet beetles from my arm and tossed them away.
We drove back in her black sports car to the parking lot where Matt and his brother were waiting. His brother backed the car dangerously close to the edge of a cliff. I swore at him. He got mad. Matt calmed us down. We drove home.
Wednesday, January 02, 2008: The monk
I found myself inside a long hall constructed from brown stone. It reminded me of a monastery. I walked towards the other end of the hall; I was looking for somebody. I was expecting somebody. Finally, they appeared at the other end of the hall. We ran towards each other, as an enemy confronts another. When we stood face to face, I saw that he was dressed in a black clothes, he had dark brown hair, his face was shaved clean, and he wore glasses with thin metal rims. He smiled was almost a sneer. He said, “This is not for you.” I wanted this information, but I did not feel relieved.

Thursday, August 16, 2007: Levitation
I sat in the lotus position as I floated two feet above the sidewalk. It was a beautiful, clear day. Two fat ladies chatted on my left and my right as I glided slowly towards my house. Suddenly, a black cat crossed my path. I ‘clothes-lined’ the cat with my forearm, pushing it out of my way.
Sunday, August 05, 2007: Downhill Race
I was outside my house, walking my silky terrier. The sky was overcast, and there were piles of brown leaves on the ground. The fence surrounding my house was rusted and broken; one section was closed off with a propped-up wooden fence. I chased my dog around the back of the house, and the properties of my neighbors had changed. There was a lot of grass, trees, and shrubs; also, an entire apartment had vanished. An old friend of mine, Stewart, was sitting on the grass, petting a cat. In another yard, a young brunette woman in a black dress was speaking to a person I could not see.
I started walking down my street. I found myself moving down the city streets on foot, other times by bus, sometimes with wuxia-style leaps through the air, and once, through a pizza parlor, but always downhill, faster and faster.
As I picked up speed, I also acquired followers. My sister, my mother, my aunts, my grandmother, eventually bystanders. We were speeding towards White City, a shopping center across a bridge. At the height of speed, I grabbed onto the hips of a roller-blading young blonde woman in a white bikini and zoomed off.
Saturday, January 20, 2007: Black Books, Foreperson, Mantra, Mirror
While browsing a comic book store, I came across three books with black covers. They were a set of graphic novels, written and illustrated by Eric Willand. [Eric was an acquaintance I made back in high school. I had admired his artwork.] I purchased the three black books.
Later, I dreamed about an female Asian foreman. She was shouting at two truck drivers, “Stop, you’re mixing them!”
I dreamed of a mantra, “Money, energy, matter, and time.”
I dreamed that I was purposefully gazing into a mirror, because I was thinking to myself about the nature of mirrors in dreams. When I looked into the mirror, I could only see a small portion of my face, whichever I was focused on.
Tuesday, November 28, 2006: Mascara
As I stood in my dimly lit bathroom, I looked into the mirror. I had black makeup around my eyes, smeared dark circles. There was even black makeup in my left eye. While examining my left eye, I noticed that the iris had separated from the white of my eye.
I recalled this dream in the shower, as I was rubbing my eye.
Monday, October 23, 2006: Second Story Man
Under cover of night, I scaled a stone building. A rectangular reflecting pool was adjacent to the building. I wore loose dark clothing, and a scimitar on my belt. The stone had many crevasses and decorations to grip. I climbed up to a balcony, entered a room, and examined its contents by touch. What I searched for was not here. I climbed to another balcony, and continued my search.
Somehow, my brother appeared. He wanted to follow in my footsteps, but he was incompetent. He made too much noise. He couldn’t climb well. And he drew attention to us, so much that we were accosted by guards. I drove them back with my scimitar, while my brother hid behind me, clinging to my back. I couldn’t endure my brother’s interference any longer, so I climbed down and left.
I walked to my father’s house; he had moved. His house was on a corner. The road had a lot of noisy traffic, as it seemed to be a common shortcut. He wanted to borrow money, but I said no. My wife and daughter arrived, and I departed with them.
I was cuddling with my wife in bed. She asked me if I ever loved anybody else. I replied honestly, that yes I had, but that was years before I met her.
Wednesday, October 18, 2006: Kramer Annoyed
Kramer, from the television show Seinfeld, seemed annoyed with me. As I wandered around his apartment, observing the cornucopia of his bizarre acquisitions and inventions, another man entered the apartment, and annoyed him more. I took this as an opportunity to make amends, and made a positive comment about the blueprint hanging on the wall. Kramer’s attitude towards me immediately lightened. He said that he wanted to be an architect. The blueprint resembled a layout of my childhood home.
More Seinfeld dreams!
I had a repetitive data entry dream, where I was entering numerous elements of a dream taxonomy into my laptop.
When I engage in repetitive activities while awake, I often dream about them. This past week, I have been backfilling the database behind this site with past dreams, as well as tagging them appropriately.
During the night, as I started to wake up, I realized that I was waking up, and dreamed that my memories of my prior dreams were swallowed up in a black balloon, floating away from me into darkness as I flailed blindly after its tether.
Again, I am having difficulty with dream recall. I think I am trying too hard.

Monday, October 17, 2005: End of the World
I was walking along a sidewalk. I was driven by an inner voice, or a memory of an inner voice, a prophetess in my head. The voice told me to go to a certain place.
As I traveled, the voice told me that as a sign, I would come across a great rift. As I walked along the sidewalk, I saw that ahead of me was a deep chasm. On the bridge that crossed the chasm was a girl who was struggling to walk a german shepherd. She didn’t appear friendly to me, so I quickly moved on.
I came upon a house. A woman was selling Halloween ornaments that her gifted daughter had made. I examined them; they were excellent sculptures of white ghosts. As I was offering to buy them, I realized, by the voice, that the world was coming to an end.
I told the woman about this; she asked how I knew, and I told her it was a gift. She revealed that her daughter was similarly gifted, and that as for herself, she was both a scientist and a witch. She said that a meteor was approaching, a planet killer.
We watched from a window overlooking the city as the sun was blotted out and the sky grew black. The stars were radiant, and an ominous shadow tumbled against them.
Together, we tried a ritual of science and magic to turn the meteor away from us. She wore a colorful costume and danced in a circle of lights. I focused my attention upon a screen, with pinpoints of lights upon it. The lights clustered and dispersed as I concentrated upon them.
But the ritual failed. We knew intuitively that her daughter opposed us and caused the ritual to fail.
Monday, April 18, 2005: Church Service, Attacked by a Cat
I found myself at a church service with my wife and children, one that I did not wish to attend. The church service was put on by the same congregation that we had left several years ago. I saw a lot of familiar faces, some I had hoped that I would never see again.
In another dream, a black cat latched onto my arm with its claws and was biting and hissing at me. I peeled him off my arm, and he latched himself onto my leg instead.
Wednesday, January 05, 2005: Tumor
While swinging a sharp sword, I accidentally cut my chest. I removed my shirt to examine the injury. The cut wasn't bleeding much, but the cut revealed a large round black tumor growing in my chest. It looked like a hollow black rubber sphere, about the size of a golf ball. The slice bisected the sphere.

Thursday, September 30, 2004: White SUV
I sat in the front passenger seat of a massive white SUV. A burly black man was driving, and a skinny white man was in the back seat. The SUV was so big, we couldn’t see over the front end of the vehicle to drive. I take a turn trying to drive it and we all laugh.
Tuesday, September 21, 2004: Gaming Store, Tooth Falls Out
While browsing the books and other supplies in a gaming store, I found a book with pages of white faux-leather and gold lettering. I also found a miniature figurine of a giant wooly caterpillar with a large howdah on its back. In the store, I saw a girl wearing Victorian-goth clothes. I said hello to her. She seemed surprised that I could see her, as if she were a ghost.
In another dream, while looking in a mirror, one of my molars fell out of my mouth, leaving a large black post where it was. The post seemed bigger than the actual tooth.
I don't actually have any teeth with posts in them.
Tuesday, August 03, 2004: Apartments
I was standing across the street from a pair of three-story apartments, sitting on an open plain. The apartments had flat roofs and were constructed, if you had a bird’s-eye view, to resemble the letter W. The house on the left was yellow; the house on the right was white. By way of color, position, and height, the apartment on the right resembled my childhood home on Dartmouth Street, and the apartment on the left resembled... the apartment to the left of my childhood home. Because the apartments were on an open plain, I felt nervous about approaching tornados, though there wasn't a cloud in sight.
A woman was selling the yellow house. It seems I had already bought the white house. “If I had the money,” I thought, “I would buy both houses.”
As I examined the house, I discovered that the basement ceiling was very low, and I was able to move the floorboards overhead. The upper interior of the house had a wide open space with heavy, movable wrought-iron stairs, platforms, and even stranger structures, one of which I think was a folding cube.
My father, brother, uncles, and my father’s (now deceased) dog were in the house. As Bandit, my father’s dead dog approached me, I felt apprehensive, because I knew that, in real life, the dog was dead.
In another dream I had, I was in a hotel bed. I had a cold. My nose was very runny. I blew my nose frequently and put the tissues on the floor next to the bed. Steve (Jack Davenport) and Susan (Sarah Alexander) from the BBC TV show Coupling were in the bed next to me, arguing.
I had a dream that I was living in a first-floor studio of an apartment complex. A young black man outside my window was complaining about how loud my music was.
I had a dream that I was reading RPG review online, something that I was doing frequently last night.
Finally, in the last dream I remember, I was talking to a small latino boy and his family. He had a black pet that could talk, though I can’t remember if it was a cat or a dog.
Saturday, July 31, 2004: Vehicles, Haunted House, Fiestaware
I was outside, during the day, looking at dusty, old automobiles. Only one of them could start, but the other couldn’t start.
In another dream, I was outside at night with friends. An attack was mounting. I jumped into a jeep, but the jeep was under remote control. The doors and windows closed and locked, and the jeep began to drive away with me. My friends shouted to get out. I unlocked the door and jumped out.
In the next dream, I was at a carnival. I got on a haunted house ride. The walls were painted black, and the monsters were day-glo colors. I seem to remember a tall man with a drill.
In the final dream, my wife and I were in a store looking at Fiestaware, in all its different colors.
