Friday, May 21, 2010: Elements
He stood inside a stone building. Others stood around with him. Through a wide opening, they looked at the water and the light of day.
But something viscous, black, and malevolent surged within the water. It began to bulge and lift itself up through the opening. Panic spread through the others. Darkness fell. He grabbed a thick branch and climbed upstairs.
Already, the sky was black. Trees bent in the wind. He leaped into the air and flew, carried by the wind backwards and upwards. Below, savages with spears pursued him. He pointed the thick branch at them. He expected lightning to shoot out from the branch, but instead, out came a glowing green streamer of energy that remained on the air and floated down softly.
Wednesday, April 28, 2010: Tube, Leper
He got out of bed and walked into the bathroom. He began to shave. He stopped and looked into the mirror at his face. He saw a pink tube protruding from his left jaw. It seemed to run up the side of his face, under the skin. He did not pull the tube; he thought that might cause his skin to tear. Instead, he carefully pushed the tube out of his face. He pressed the loose skin back into place. He had the impression that the tube was left from a previous operation.
In another dream, he was with a group of people in a building. There was a degenerate leprous man crawling in the ducts above the ceiling. They were trying to find a way to expel him from the building without exposing themselves.
Monday, March 08, 2010: Zombie Apocalypse
He walked up Pilgrim Ave towards his house, with a gun in one hand and a sword in the other hand, fighting off wave after wave of shambling zombies. He escorted a couple up the street, making sure they were armed to continue their journey. Another couple, one a ghost and one alive, passed him on the sidewalk. He arrived at his house, now reinforced with concrete and steel. From time to time, he opened a gunport and fired out at the zombies.
He woke up, went back to sleep, and the dream continued.
He entered a white room. There were weapon in one corner. He passed over the rapiers. He selected a longsword and a dagger. He asked his friend Bob what was his weapon of choice against zombies. Bob replied axes.
He walked into another room, and swung his weapons at the walls.
Wednesday, November 04, 2009: Leeches
He walked down a cracked and pocked sidewalk along a dead-end street. Some of the holes in the sidewalk were filled with black smoking liquid. On his right was a tall fence with a hedge, and there were tall trees behind the fence, on the other side of the street, and at the end of the street. It was day, but there was only dim light because the trees shaded the dead-end road.
Others walked with him. They seemed to be searching for something. A moment came when they changed direction, away from the dead-end.
A father was looking for his son. The father said that his son told him there was something in the sidewalk. He changed direction again to show the holes in the sidewalk to the father. The holes had changed. They were filled with clear liquid, and tiny black leeches slinked and jumped out of the liquid. He and the father reacted to them by changing direction again, away from the dead-end road.
A school bus passed by. Something was wrong and people were being rescued.
Wednesday, August 13, 2008: Medusa
He stumbled out of bed into the bathroom. Dark shapes slithered behind the shower curtain. His vision dimmed until he was blind. He called out for help, but there was no answer.
He found himself back in bed. In the dark, his wife stood over him. He began to get up, and saw her face was a mass of writhing worms.
He knew he was asleep, and he tried to call out in his sleep to his wife sleeping next to him. A scratching at his leg woke him; the dog must have heard him crying out.
Sunday, December 16, 2007: Murky
My recollection of my last dream is vague until the end. I seem to recall a struggle of words between several persons over reason versus religion. I also recall food. And the dream ended in the back yard of my childhood home. A pool of stagnant water lay beneath a canopy, and I disturbed the water with a stick.
Saturday, December 15, 2007: Sleep paralysis and seven other dreams
After falling asleep, I dreamed that I was lying in bed. The room was dark. The bedsheets were white. I could feel the dog lying on the bed at my feet, and my wife was lying to my left; I was turned on my side facing her. I could not move! I could not speak! I tried to wake up but I could not wake up. I could feel shapes sliding past me, shadows, nightmare thoughts, slipping past me, trying to emerge: a mouth, lips and teeth, fingertips. With great concentration, I moved my right hand over myself. I could feel it tingling, as if it were waking up. I tried to speak to my wife. Shelby, help me wake up! I repeated this over and over.
Finally, in real life, she woke me up. She said that she heard me while she was sleeping, asking her to help me. After sitting up with the lamp on for a few minutes, I returned to sleep.
I had a dream that I was investigating a cellar with my aunts Florence and Jeanne. It was dark, and made of old poured concrete. There was a door which we entered from the ground level. The cellar was cluttered with objects so covered with dust and cobwebs, I could not distinguish them. There were spiders and other insects crawling about. I kicked a piece of something, and silverfish crawled from under it. One spider was at least three feet across! At the other end of the cellar was a door, and stairs up to another door. Below the first door was a rectangular drop, without stairs, a ten foot cubic hollow with another door! I asked my aunts about it and they said they did not know where the door leads to. I considered how I would climb down to investigate
I had a dream that I was on a tour bus. The bus was full of people of all kinds. A group of children were sitting together. I told them the story of Jesus. When I concluded, one of them asked with astonishment if it was true. I laughed and said, no, it was not true.
I had a dream that my silky terrier was chasing rats around and bringing them back to me in his mouth. I felt worried that he would catch a disease from them. The rats he brought back had big teeth.
I had a dream that I was chewing something, and the teeth on the left side of my mouth crumbled to pieces. After, I inspected them, and they were all still intact.
I had a dream that I was walking up my street. An old high school friend, Brian, pulled over in a convertible and offered me a ride. I got in the car, and began to tell him everything that had happened since I saw him last.
I had a dream that I walked the dog outside, and it was warm. When I went back inside the house, the house felt cold. I mentioned this to my wife, and suggested we open the windows of the house to let in the warm air.
The last dream left me with only vague impressions of being at a party, and meeting a celebrity, but I can remember no details.
Sunday, September 16, 2007: Light Bulbs, Abandoned Houses, Sisters
I was working in a hotel. My task was to change the light bulbs in each guest room. The predominant color of the rooms was dusky rose.
I was looking through a window over a neighborhood of run down, abandoned houses. Their peeling and chipping paint was brick red.
In the last dream I had, I was walking up my street. I stopped at a corner. My wife’s sisters were lecturing one of their own, saying, “What did you expect?”
Wednesday, July 04, 2007: Found Money
I was shuffling with others down an ash-laden street. One of the others caught a gleam of metal in the gutter: a coin. We sifted through the ash in the gutter and found more coins. I held a handful of large gold coins, then pocketed them.
Saturday, April 07, 2007: Worms
I only recall dreaming about worms squirming on the floor. They were yellow, and varied in length and thickness. They made me feel uncomfortable.

Monday, January 01, 2007: Dog Tooth
My silky terrier had a bad tooth. He seemed very unhappy about it. I took him to the vet. She gave him anesthesia and pulled his tooth. He lay comfortably on the table, asleep, with his mouth open, showing a gap in his teeth.
Wednesday, December 20, 2006: Bad Street, Bad Plumbing, Bad Dream
I walked down Cohassett Street, early in the morning. The pavement was in a state of disrepair. Much of the street was merely exposed earth. A sewer access pipe jutted out of the pavement, a dangerous obstacle to any car. I saw a bus stop sign on the right side of the street, and thought to myself, “I have never seen a bus travel down this road before.”
I crossed the road and entered a brick apartment building; this was apparently our new home. My wife and I were inspecting it. The rooms were spacious, with ceilings at least twelve feet high, and even wider and longer. But the plumbing in this building was bad. One pipe broke in my hands as I examined it. Others pipes were leaking, some pouring out a copious quantity of water. I said to my wife to call a plumber while I was at work, and have him fix all of the plumbing, no matter what the cost.
In the last dream I had, I dreamed that I was in bed, having a bad dream. I spoke to my wife in my sleep, asking her to wake me up.
Friday, November 17, 2006: House of Rose and Verdigris
I was lying in a bed under heavy white cotton sheets and a lemon comforter. I was alone. I had the impression that I was old. I felt very sluggish, but I could not sleep. I thought that I should rise and take some fresh air. I lifted myself out of bed, walked across the cold white marble floor, across the brick patio, and into a garden of geometrically-sculpted bushes. I admired the view of my palace, with its rose marble walls and verdigris dome.
Slowly, my eyes dimmed. I became weaker, and I sank into the grass. I could not lift myself. I crawled in darkness through the grass, feeling its blades and bare spots with my hands. I thought to myself, “I am going to die, alone, in this place.”
Eventually, I reached the patio, and my bedroom, and I lay in bed. A dark figure appears over me, and I woke up.
Saturday, November 11, 2006: Depressed Neighborhood, Waterfront, and Finally, Vermont
I walked in an unfamiliar neighborhood at night. The apartment buildings around me were crumbling apart. The few people I saw wore shabby clothes. Numerous large dogs roamed the streets, and I imagined they converged upon me. I stood in a playground that was used as a dumping ground instead. I climbed between a jungle gym and a stack of miscellaneous construction debris, to escape the dogs. I was high above the ground.
In another dream, my wife and I were living in a house that was built next to the ocean. This made me very nervous. I moved from window to window, searching for any sign of weakness in the house. It was day, so I could see that the foundation was stone. The house was covered with white aluminum siding. The tide appeared to be rising, and the waves rolled into our foundation higher and higher, but never reached above the foundation.
There you have it, two of my phobias: deep bodies of water and large dogs.
The house itself, from the outside, resembles our own house, which has a gray stone foundation and white aluminum siding.
In my last dream, my wife and I had arrived in Vermont, on vacation. It was night. We were in downtown Burlington. We walked along Church Street and Main Street, and on the nearby college campus. The streets and shops were bustling with activity, people of all ages and walks of life. We wondered aloud what we should do first. Half-joking, half-seriously, we both replied that we should look for jobs.
My wife and I are going on a vacation to Vermont soon. Vermont is a dream to us.
Wednesday, September 28, 2005: Leaky Bathtub
We moved into an apartment on Grafton Street, much like my parents’ previous residence, and we were selling our house.
I got out of bed to get ready for work. I went to the bathroom. As I began to run the water to take a bath, I witnessed all of the water run out of the tub. I examined the tub and found that it was badly damaged, with gaping holes in it. I told my wife and children about this, and said that the house wasn’t sold yet, and we still had time to move back if we wanted.
Wednesday, November 10, 2004: Accident, Decay, Rooftop
Sitting in the backseat of a co-worker's car, in a parking lot at night. There was snow on the ground. As we were pulling out of the parking lot, we accidentally ran over the leg of a woman who fell near the car. Everything was moving slowly.
In another dream, I was in my house. I went into the bathroom. When I flushed the toilet, the toilet sunk through the wooden floor, which seemed waterlogged, spongey, and decayed. The water draining through the holes in the floor reminded me of seawater sinking into bubbling holes in beach sand.
In my last dream, I was walking with a friend in a strange neighborhood during the day. Colorful houses sat atop green hills. I climbed onto one of the rooftops of a house and discovered that I could not get down.
Tuesday, September 21, 2004: Gaming Store, Tooth Falls Out
While browsing the books and other supplies in a gaming store, I found a book with pages of white faux-leather and gold lettering. I also found a miniature figurine of a giant wooly caterpillar with a large howdah on its back. In the store, I saw a girl wearing Victorian-goth clothes. I said hello to her. She seemed surprised that I could see her, as if she were a ghost.
In another dream, while looking in a mirror, one of my molars fell out of my mouth, leaving a large black post where it was. The post seemed bigger than the actual tooth.
I don't actually have any teeth with posts in them.
Tuesday, September 14, 2004: Leak, Dogs
It was raining outside. There was a leak under the sink. I checked the leak and it started gushing. All of the wood in the pantry became saturated with water. It was so soft, it gave under a little foot pressure.
I had a dream that I was preaching to a crowd of dogs. I was quoting scripture from a dog bible.
In the last dream, I was taking my dog for a walk, outside of the fence around our house. A gang of roaming dogs approached. I picked up Pippin to protect him from the dogs, and made my way back to the house.
Monday, August 16, 2004: Mall, Old Friend and Poetry
I was in a large department store or shopping mall. The roof leaked. In the mall, I saw some security guards. And I saw two girls from Rich Girls. Or they could have been Edina and Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous?
I had a very positive dream about my old friend Will. He was living in a large apartment. Everything was painted white. His father was living there again, as were several other room-mates. Will was going to submit my poetry to a web site called Lovegods.com, or Lovegods.org, or something like that.
I checked the web sites and they don't exist, beyond some kind of dating serving links.
Saturday, July 31, 2004: Vehicles, Haunted House, Fiestaware
I was outside, during the day, looking at dusty, old automobiles. Only one of them could start, but the other couldn’t start.
In another dream, I was outside at night with friends. An attack was mounting. I jumped into a jeep, but the jeep was under remote control. The doors and windows closed and locked, and the jeep began to drive away with me. My friends shouted to get out. I unlocked the door and jumped out.
In the next dream, I was at a carnival. I got on a haunted house ride. The walls were painted black, and the monsters were day-glo colors. I seem to remember a tall man with a drill.
In the final dream, my wife and I were in a store looking at Fiestaware, in all its different colors.
