Friday, September 03, 2010: Wife eats a peanut

He and his wife were standing in the kitchen. His wife ate a peanut to see how she would react. Her face swelled up and she feinted, falling into his arms. He picked up the phone and called an emergency number and shouted at them to hurry.

Monday, August 16, 2010: Soft Pretzel Present, Round Twin

He and his wife left their small apartment at night. He went ahead of her to find something. But it was too late to catch the bus. He returned to the apartment with a soft pretzel. It was their anniversary. He gave her the soft pretzel as a present. She loved it.

He walked in a strange hospital with his brother and his father. He entered a room with a twin of himself that was morbidly obese to the point of roundness. A group of orderlies surrounded him and bound this round him. They opened up the wall and rolled him away. He thought it was strange because he was still here.

Friday, May 28, 2010: Calling for Ice Cream Delivery

He stood at a gas station. It was daylight. There were cars and people filling up their cars with gas.

He felt bewildered, not knowing where he was. He was talking on a cell phone to a woman. He was asking her about ice cream delivery. She asked him where he needed the ice cream delivered to. He looked around for street signs, but didn't see any. He asked others where he was, but they did not tell him.

Friday, October 23, 2009: The Beginning of the End

He surveyed the condition and contents of a large and complex building his family had moved into recently. His wife was nearby, in another room; now and then he or she would shout a discovery to the other. For example, he examined a food tin with an unexpired date. His children were further away but present. The building was old and needed repair. But it was also stocked with foodstuffs and other supplies necessary for survival. There were many boxes. There were sheets covering furniture. He felt safe here.

He left the building and hopped on a bus. As it drove down Hamilton Street and approached Billings Square, it stopped, and he got off the bus. It was raining and snowing. The water level was ankle deep at Billings Square, and appeared to be deeper as one continued on Grafton Street towards downtown.

“It has started,” said a young female voice in his thoughts. He turned and began to walk home, away from the water, uphill.

The location, size, and condition of the building reminded me of Dartmouth Street School, renamed the Multiple Intelligences School, which is closed and empty.

Tuesday, January 20, 2009: The Race

He was in a department store filled with toys and candy. Many children and parents gathered for games. He was participating in a race. He stood at the starting line along with three other racers, all female, and one was a child. The track was short, no more than several paces. The lines for each racer were not evenly spaced. Another racer tried to change this. But he pointed out that this was normal. Oh, the other racer said. The starter stepped up to the side of the track. The track had shrunk to a few paces. He got set. The starter quietly mumbled, Go. He ran, practically leaping the distance. Another racer was close to the finish line, but he crossed first. She turned to him and said in a dazed tone, You won. He looked back, and one of the racers had not even left the starting line. She just stood there in shock.

Saturday, April 05, 2008: Lost while driving in a box with my brother

I had a dream that I was driving down a road at night. I was driving in a rectangular black plastic bucket (we use them for trash receptacles). I do not know how I was steering or accelerating or braking, but I drove it somehow. My brother was on the passenger side. Once, he stood up to look over the side, and I told him to move his big rear end out of the way; he was blocking my view of the road. We were lost, so we decided to pull over to ask for directions.

Finally, without bucket or brother, dawn rose, and I found myself walking on the side of a familiar road, not too far from home. There was a bucket of food in the gutter. I was hungry and they were all wrapped in plastic. It did not seem like trash to me, rather, it seemed like somebody knew I would be stopping by that part of the road and left supplies for me along the way.

Wednesday, January 23, 2008: Healthy soup

Doug and I were in an Asian restaurant discussing the thin layer of organic life that covers the earth, using a large overturned bowl for illustration.

The hostess informed us that the restaurant was not yet open for business. So we got up to walk out. At the exit, I glanced at a menu. One item that stood out was a spicy medicinal soup that cleared the mind, cleansed the body, and warmed the blood.

I realized, a few steps from the door, that I still had the bowl in my hand, so I walked back to the restaurant and returned it.

Monday, January 21, 2008: Driving circles around Vermont, bagel shop

I was driving in a counterclockwise circle around the outskirts of a city in Vermont. To my right were snowy mountains. To my left were buildings. One building was topped with a giant inflatable crab.

I walked into a bagel shop. There were bakers and servers behind the counter. I spied through a doorway on the right metal racks of bagels. I walked over to a rack of bagels on the left. I looked over the fresh bagels. I saw a salt bagel. I reached for it with my right hand. I noticed my right hand. I thought to myself, I am asleep. I tried to feel the right hand of my waking self, and I moved my fingers in my sleep. Then I woke up.

Saturday, January 19, 2008: Dinner party

I entered a wide room. Candelabras and candle sconces lit the room. In the center of the room stretched a long table, with a tablecloth, set for an elegant dinner. The host was an aristocratic man, the guests who seated themselves were also members of high society. I recognized none of them. But I was the guest of honor, so my wife and I seated ourselves. Before dinner, we played a game, but I misplayed my turn, and time skipped ahead two hours. We ended the game and sat down again, as dinner was being served. I passed my wife a crab puff. My champagne glass was filled and sparkled like gold.

Sunday, December 16, 2007: Murky

My recollection of my last dream is vague until the end. I seem to recall a struggle of words between several persons over reason versus religion. I also recall food. And the dream ended in the back yard of my childhood home. A pool of stagnant water lay beneath a canopy, and I disturbed the water with a stick.

Thursday, November 15, 2007: Woody

I had a dream that I was having lunch alfresco with Woody Allen. We discussed creative writing, and writer’s block and how to cope with it.

In another dream, I was playing with my dog in my living room.

Tuesday, August 07, 2007: Autumn, Old Friend, Party, Faulty Brakes

I was walking up a street in my neighborhood. In an instant, autumn fell. The leaves on the trees turned orange and yellow; already many leaves had dropped to the ground.

In another dream, I was hanging out at the house of an old friend, Matt. He had his Intellivision game system, still working. He was showing me a new game that somebody had made. I remarked on how they achieved such a stunning 3D effect on such a limited game platform.

In another dream, I found myself at a party in a strange house. It was crowded and noisy. There were lots of ice cream bars in the freezer.

In the last dream I had, I was in the car of my sister. She had parked the car in a parking lot, and had already exited the vehicle. I was climbing out of the back seat, when the vehicle began to roll. I jumped into the driver seat and tried to stop it. I told her that the brakes were very spongy and she should get them looked at.

Sunday, July 15, 2007: Seven More Dreams

I was walking up Dell Ave. At the corner of Dell Ave and Robin Road, where a house had been, there was construction going on: digging, pouring concrete, etc.

I had a dream that I was watching a Star Trek combat simulator video game.

I had a dream of a cat-girl playing with kittens.

I had a dream that Mr and Mrs Claus were selling igloos at the mall.

I had a dream that I was in a brightly lit candy store. I took a bag of assorted confections from a shelf.

In the last dream I had, I put my hand in a spider web. I pulled my hand away, and as I woke, I realized I had moved my hand in my sleep.

Tuesday, June 26, 2007: Falling, Eating a Frog, Catching an Crocodile

I stood on the roof of a tall white apartment building. After looking over the edge, I stepped off. With my back to the white plastic siding, I fell five stories down. Yet I landed on my feet unharmed.

I was at a picnic. Between thumb and forefinger, I plucked up a live frog from my plate. I put its rubbery leg in my mouth and bit its leg off at the joint.

Down by a river, I caught a crocodile with a hook and line, baited with a fish. I lifted the reptile out of the water. It thrashed and snapped its teeth at my hand.

Wednesday, March 28, 2007: Tornadoes and Kittens

I was walking up my street in the morning. As I looked around, in every direction I turned, I saw tornadoes in the distance.

In another dream, I was herding kittens, one by one, into the living room of an unfamiliar house at night. When I estimated that we had a sufficient number of kittens, I asked, “OK, now, which ones are the eatin’ kittens?”

Sunday, December 10, 2006: Too Close Shave, Strange Toilet, Dog Bite, Ice Cream

My wife gave me a facial hair trimmer for Christmas. I performed a test shave in the bathroom mirror. The trimmer shaved too close; it shaved off the skin on my chin in two places.

In another dream, I was hanging out with my old friend William, at his radio show, with a couple of well-known but much older rappers. We were discussing Rap Theory, the rise and decline of the music genre.

I had a dream that I was at a party. People were dancing, talking, drinking. I fondled two different women; they didn't seem to mind. During the dream, I found that I was describing the dream to somebody in a second separate dream. In the second separate dream, I was in a group therapy session, led by a husky, middle-aged black man.

In another dream, I was in my basement, examining the toilet in the bathroom. I noticed that there was a blue plastic skirt around the toilet base. I removed the skirt and discovered that there was nothing under it but a deep hole, to a sub-basement, with a blue pool of water. “Somebody is going to fall into that,” I thought to myself.

I had a dream that I was in the ice cream section of a supermarket. The ice cream was gourmet quality, in various delightful flavors and shapes. I selected an orange cream flavored gelato.

In the last dream I can recall, our little silky terrier was having a panic attack. He was lashing out, growling and biting at everything. I got his attention, to protect my wife, and to calm him down. He leaped up and latched onto my thumb with his back teeth. It doesn’t hurt; he doesn't even break the skin. His jaw jutted at an unusual angle. I held him in the air for a while. He seemed to ponder the situation and calmed down, releasing my thumb.

Friday, November 24, 2006: Superhero, Hospital, College

I was a superhero, standing in a line with other superheroes, waiting to be allowed to enter a city of superheroes. I wore a costume, but I did not have a mask. I searched for a suitable mask, but I only found mexican wrestler masks. As I entered the city, a costumed woman handed me a list of rules to follow. The city was futuristic in appearance, with escalators and moving walkways, glass, steel, concrete, and bright lights. It was teeming with caped and costumed superheroes. I explained to a friend that this place was like the Justice League.

In another dream, I was in a hospital. I was slowly pacing a room with a doctor. The room was clean, with light blue tile and curtains. The doctor looked like M Night Shyamalan. He described the procedure to me in a calm voice. He also spoke to a woman who would be assisting him, listing the surgical instruments that he would require. The procedure involved operating on my chest. The nurse asked if my chest would need to be shaved.

In my last dream, I returned to college. In a classroom and in the halls, I saw my brother and many highscool friends. I walked into a cooking class; the teacher was Emeril Lagasse. As I walked around the class, speaking with Emeril, I stretched a piece of dough into a pizza. I apologized to Emeril for missing his class, explained that I was sick, and asked if there was any makeup work or tests. He said not to worry about it. I searched the classroom for a pizza stone, but I could not find one. All I could find was more dough, in various shapes and stages.

Tuesday, November 21, 2006: Vermont at Last

My wife and I wandered Church Street in Burlington, Vermont. We shopped, dined, drank coffee, and listened to street musicians, again and again. We had a wonderful time.

In a separate, brief dream, I tried to climb down from a twenty-foot tall stone pillar to the ground.

In real life, my wife and I drove to Burlington this weekend. We stayed at the Willard Street Inn. Each day, we walked to Church Street. While we were awake, we wandered Burlington; while we slept, we wandered Burlinton.

On a side note, I picked up Little Nemo 1905-1914, a collection of the surreal sunday comic by Winsor McCay.

Sunday, November 12, 2006: School Party, Two Dogs, Cartoons

I found myself in a brick school building, with other children; I was a child myself. There were remnants of a party all around us: empty cups and trays of pastries. I gathered a plate of cookies and a cinnamon bun for myself. I think it was a celebration of a school reopening.

In another dream, my wife and I were living in a brick apartment. We had two strange dogs under our care, one large and one small. I got out of bed and opened a door to a balcony. The dogs took this as an opportunity to escape. They jumped off the balcony. I looked down, several stories, and they landed without harm. Other dogs were gathering in the street. The big dog and the small dog approached these other dogs. At first, I felt concerned for them. Then I remembered that these were not my dogs, and that I didn't care what happened to them, beyond simple humaneness. I closed the door, happy to be rid of the dogs.

I vaguely recall dreaming about a living cartoon creature, like a koosh ball with legs. Its name was Norubunga.

Saturday, October 14, 2006: Intruder, Egyptian Studies, Carnival

There was a homicidal maniac in our house. My wife, my son, my daughter, and I were simultaneously trying to catch him, drive him out of our house, and run away from him. When we finally drove him out, we celebrated by having ice cream sundaes.

After the sundaes, I helped my daughter with her history report on Ancient Egypt, while my son and wife watched television.

We brought in a contractor to go over the repairs that would be necessary before we sold our house. It was going to cost a lot of money, but it was worth it, because our property value had skyrocketed.

The Waffle of Whimsy

Then we walked down Park Ave, near Elm Park. A carnival filled the park and even the adjacent street. Apparently, games where you use small catapults to fling waffles, pies, tacos, and other foods at hungry targets were de rigeur. We walked on the other side of this game, along a wooden fence where some foods had sailed over the targets. We had to wade through a pile of waffles.

Monday, October 09, 2006: Sodding Seinfeld

Cosmo Kramer and George Costanza, from the TV show Seinfeld, were having tea with a British friend. This friend has a weak spot for pastries, and cursing his weakness, exclaimed, “Sodding cakes!” A bell rung in Kramer’s head; he had an idea.

In the next scene, George was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and Kramer dumped a wheelbarrow full of dirt over Costanza’s head through a kitchen window.

Apparently, Kramer had confused the intended British slang meaning of the word sodding, for the word sod, or a clump of dirt, thus prompting him to consider geophagy.

Monday, September 26, 2005: Missing Stairs

I had a dream that we were living in our old apartment on Northampton Street. I opened the front hall door. A girl was selling cookies. She was at the bottom of the stairs; I was at the top. Looking down, I saw that there were many steps missing, and that the hall window was much larger than I remember.

Monday, October 18, 2004: Rivers of Coffee and Flying Bears

I followed one of my co-workers, Ray, around a busy factory floor. I felt concerned for him, as he has health problems in real life. We were trying to complete an agenda he had written out on his hand, but the task was overwhelming. We rode conveyor belts to move about the factory. Somehow, I lost him.

In another dream, I was in a sprawling apartment. The walls were painted white. There was clutter everywhere, mostly laundry. Downstairs, on the sidewalk outside of the building, police were inspecting a cargo container. It was strangely labeled. I don’t remember the exact wording, but it made the container seem safe, even though there were terrorists hiding inside the container. Upstairs, there was a party on a balcony. It was a bright day. Macaulay Culkin popped some kind of drug into my mouth... LSD? I didn’t notice anything unusual. I wondered when it would take effect. I walked into the apartment. I remember following a kid into a very messy room, cluttered with laundry, models, video games, etc.

The party and Macaulay Culkin are drawn from the movie Party Monster. The terrorists in the box... they’re probably from the presidential debate, where John Kerry has repeated over and over that the majority of containers coming into the United States ports are not inspected.

In another dream, I was outside, walking up my street, early in the morning, before the sun was up. I could hear a hair dryer whirring from from my neighbor’s house. I wondered, “Wow, that is a loud hairdryer, for me to hear it from outside.” I had a blanket wrapped around me. It was very cold. As I neared my fence, I suddenly sensed a large dog behind me. I wrapped the blanket around me tighter, and everything became darker.

I’m fairly certain somebody in my house was running a hair dryer in the morning, and I could hear it in my sleep.

In the final dream, I had crossed Hamilton Street. Suddenly, the street became a river of coffee. Across the river, a barn full of coffee beans sprung up, and a Starbucks-like building appeared at the top of the hill. The coffee smelled great, but I wondered how I would cross the river to go home. Somebody was with me... I’m not sure who. I told him, “They did this,” and pointed at two small brown bears with purple butterfly wings, hiding in the bushes. I caught one of the bears, and held it upside-down by its legs, demanding that he change the street back.

Maybe I’m craving coffee? The bears were drawn from real-life, where a couple days ago, my daughter had shown me a teddy bear she received at a party.
