Thursday, June 17, 2010: Seeking Shelter

From a wide picture window, they saw the circulation of clouds forming into a tornado. He, his wife, his two children, his friend, and his dog descended three flights of stairs, into the cellar. The cellar was partially submerged in water. Despite the water, the dog was able to swim and keep up. They exited the cellar, moving quickly towards a metal bunker.

Sunday, June 13, 2010: Apocalypse

As the apocalypse unfolded, to the noisy distress of others inside the concrete bunker, he and a smaller band left.

The sky was dark with clouds and the ground was bare. The giant, squat metal vehicle was overloaded. He and the band climbed the scaffolding, and floor by floor, sifted through boxes, gathering valuables and discarding the dross.

Ash began to fall from the sky. He reached the top of the teetering scaffolding, throwing and pushing everything useless over the edge to the ground below. He opened the top drawer of a bureau. Inside were two jewelry boxes. One was filled with turquoise jewelry; the other was filled with amethyst jewelry. He took both boxes, pushed the bureau over the edge, and descended the scaffolding.

The ash fell heavier and deepened, and those in the compound grew restless, so they started the vehicle and departed.

Across blue silence,
the Sun trills a song of clouds;
fingertips, same song.

Friday, November 16, 2007: Toads

My wife, our two children, and our dog were living in a slate gray two-story home. We walked downstairs, in back of the house, to a fenced-in yard and driveway. It was warm but overcast, and the ground was damp, like Spring. We noticed toads hopping in the grass. A golden toad as big as my palm hopped on the driveway.

Tuesday, May 08, 2007: Mansion, Good Driver

My wife and I were driving with Ray and Johnny, two old friends. It was night, and there was a hurricane-like storm approaching. Ray was an excellent driver, which he demonstrated by driving backwards at high speed in a movie theater parking lot.

In another dream, my wife and I had a guest arrive at night. We were living in a mansion. We showed him to a guest room, a suite with many windows, blue walls, and a peaked roof. I asked my wife why he had the better room. Then we remembered that the room grew cold in winter.

Friday, October 27, 2006: Old Man

Under an overcast sky, I walked down a sidewalk. To my right was a road. To my left stretched a wrought-iron fence, and beyond the fence, a park with well-manicured grass and maple trees, still green. Leaning against the wrought-iron fence was an old man. I could hear him thinking out loud, “I wish everybody would leave me alone so I could just die.”

Tuesday, October 03, 2006: Burlington, Vermont

My wife and I were visiting Burlington, Vermont. We were walking down Main Street. It was winter. Near a brick school, two snow clouds swirled, one larger than the other.

Later, I was showing my writing to my old friends, Stewart and Matt. Stewart criticized one particular poem, and Matt pointed out that I wrote it when my mother died.

Saturday, September 23, 2006: Nuclear

I was in a house that I felt was my home, but looked different than my current house. I went down into the basement. It was finished in honey-colored wood and the lighting was pleasant. I was looking for my daughter; apparently, her room was in the basement. But she was not there. I opened a door and discovered a new room. In the room was a dark-haired young woman. She was sitting on a chair or the edge of a bed. I sat down on the floor in front of her. As she spoke, rising around and above her was a brilliant orange mushroom cloud. It was as if I could see it through the house.

Wednesday, July 20, 2005: My Dog, War

I was in a strange house. It had a long porch running around the entire house, and it was painted gray. My sister-in-law was there, telling me that she saw Pippin, and to come quickly. I asked if he was hurt. She said she didn't know; he just kept licking his butt. When I got to Pippin, he wasn't hurt; he was just doing what dogs do naturally. I asked him if he needed to go out, and he perked up. He was fine.

Then I was standing in an intersection atop a hill. Down the hill, I could see brown mushroom clouds. I wondered if it was nuclear war. I learned that they were conventional bombs, when I saw strange ships dropping more bombs, whose explosions mushroomed into dirty clouds of debris. The explosions got closer and closer.

I saw a friend of mine, Molly. She was worried about the explosions. I was, too. I noticed that if the bombs did not detonate on impact, they would bounce back into the air, skipping around until they did explode. At least once, we narrowly avoided an explosion because one bounced over us instead of blowing up on impact.

Behind the bombers were these squat cylidrical rotating ground machines that were hunting down survivors. It look like a large gray metal cog, lying flat, and spinning very rapidly.

I asked Molly if she thought we would be safer if we split up? She said she didn't want to be alone. So we began searching for shelter frantically. We came across a building that had the appearance of both a church and a dark pink three decker. Night was approaching. We moved around back, climbed the stairs. There were no open doors, but at least we were on an mostly enclosed porch.

Suddenly, one of the machines extended eyestalks up to the porch window. We hid behind some long window blinds that were nearby. I told Molly not to move. The eyes watched us for sometime, until we fell asleep.

We awoke to a police officer and two elderly tennants asking us what we were doing here? We said that we were hiding from the machines. They said that they should turn us over to the machines, so we quickly departed.

Wednesday, June 29, 2005: White Mansion, Storm, Dancers

I was with my family and friends in a mansion that had a white interior and large windows. As I looked out one window, I saw a storm swirling above a hilltop. A funnel cloud began to form. I warned everybody to go to the basement. But suddenly, the clouds began to disperse, from west to east, as if an invisible force swept them away. I looked out another window shortly after, and I could see a clear night sky. A man and a woman dressed in white were dancing up on the window.
