Wednesday, October 28, 2009: Skunks in the Office

He was in an office with low white cubicle walls, white pillars, white floors and outer walls and ceilings. Two skunks approached a co-worker's desk, who did not see them because the co-worker was paying attention to the computer monitor. He tried to warn the co-worker, but it was too late. One of the skunks sprayed the co-worker.

Monday, April 21, 2008: Barracks

He found himself in sparse barracks of unpainted wood. Dark green shades were pulled down over window screens. A few others of the same rank milled about the barracks.

Two officers entered the barracks through a screen door. One officer ranked higher than the other. First, they taught him how to address them correctly. Second, they gave him a mission. Then they departed.

He departed the barracks alone. He walked to a remote part of the city at twilight. He stood quietly, waiting for a bus.

After some time, a bus drove along the street. It pulled up to the curb further away than he expected. He ran to the bus. Then he remembered that he left his bags where he had stood. He begged the bus-driver to wait while he went back and retrieved his bags.

Monday, April 07, 2008: Mechanical Hell

I had a dream that I saw a rectangular opening in the sidewalk. It was two feet wide, six feet long, and four feet deep. At the bottom was an opening. Rainwater flowed into the crack. Steam and smoke rose from the opening. A woman nearby warned me that it was an opening into hell.

I was foolishly curious, so I bent down and lay on my side to get a better angle to look through the opening at the bottom. And I fell into the hole.

I rolled onto a descending conveyor belt that was covered in what appeared to be lint, dust, or hair. The air was damp and smoky.

After riding this conveyor belt down for some distance and time, I reached a level place, and long rectangular room with more conveyor belts moving in different directions.

During this pause, a coworker appeared. His head and face were enormous. He asked me a question, and I insisted that I no longer handled that function; ask so-and-so about it. He left with his big head in a huff.

I crawled along a horizontal conveyor belt to a screen door. The door was flimsy but latched shut. I looked through the screen. I could see a vast abyss beyond the screen, dark and burning. There was a din of voices, and a deep commanding voice. A demon landed and clung to a perch just outside the screen door. He was naked. He had wings and claws. He appeared to have no eyes; he appeared to have ear holes and nose slits; he had a mouth of sharp teeth. He appeared to be made out of scar tissue.

Quite foolishly, I waved my hand at this demon, to see if he could see me. He looked at me. I realized what I had done, and I woke myself up.

Saturday, February 02, 2008: Car on fire

I had a dream that I was sitting in the backseat of a blue Chevy Malibu [my first car] at night, while a coworker drove the car, and her daughter sat in the front passenger seat. We dropped off her daughter, but as we were driving by, I could see flames licking from under the hood. I told her to stop the car and get out; it was on fire!

Sunday, January 27, 2008: Trip to the country

Matt, his older brother and I drove in a white car to a rural town. After parking the car, we parted ways.

I met a girl. She seemed to know me, or at least, she was interested in me, and friendly. She had long wavy brown hair, dark brown eyes, a light coffee complexion, full lips; her blouse and jeans fit her curvy figure. As we walked, she put her arm around me, hugged me, and kissed me. She brought me to her workplace, a home goods store, and introduced me to her coworkers. I jokingly put a square of plastic turf on my head before we departed; it was her day off.

We walked to a county fair. We looked around, and ate some food. A small swarm of beetles, joined by a long strand of material, flew at me and wrapped itself from my arm. It felt very irritating. She said that they were called bracelet beetles. I carefully peeled these bracelet beetles from my arm and tossed them away.

We drove back in her black sports car to the parking lot where Matt and his brother were waiting. His brother backed the car dangerously close to the edge of a cliff. I swore at him. He got mad. Matt calmed us down. We drove home.

Friday, January 04, 2008: The office, books

In the office, coworkers were taking down Christmas decorations and replacing them with April Fools Day decorations. We walked in on a meeting, led by a woman in a gray business suit, as it was about to begin, and just as quickly, it ended.

I way lying in bed. A pile of books next to the bed spelled out the answer. But I was too asleep to understand it.

Thursday, January 03, 2008: Guitar jam

A coworker gave me a guitar. He had his own guitar. We jammed on a song. We were outside, in the woods. Blue sky and sun shone through the canopy.

I remember fingering particular chords and arpeggios, but I do not remember the song.

I had a similar dream not long ago.

Friday, November 09, 2007: Tall Brush, New Office

Bright, blue autumn day, wading through tall brown brush with a husky friend, and I am a teenager again. This is down a dirt road, near an abandoned factory. Through the brush, we spy girls sunbathing by a pool. They notice us, and call us over. We walk over, brushing the burrs from our clothes. One girl, a brunette wearing a light blue bikini, will talk to me, but not to my friend.

In the second dream, I am sitting with coworkers in an office different than my own. There are no cubicles. There are a lot of windows. Our work-group desks are clustered together. We are discussing things not related to work.

I just read Generation X, microserfs, and JPod, by Douglas Coupland. This may have contributed to the office dream.

Friday, July 13, 2007: Elderly Encouragement, Queue

I am working in my cubicle, only instead of my cubicle at work, I am sitting in the pantry from my childhood home. Two co-workers escort an elderly woman to my cubicle. They do not introduce her. She puts out her left hand and I shake it. She says, “Keep up the good work.”

In another dream, I am standing in a queue, waiting to buy tickets. There is a very tall man standing behind me. When I get up to the ticket seller, the tall man leans over me and purchases a ticket ahead of me. I elbow him in the ribs, and he says, “Is somebody there?” This makes me angry, and I try to trip him as he leaves, but he steps over my extended foot.

Wednesday, February 07, 2007: Magic in the Office

I was in my childhood home. It was night, and the house was dark. I looked into my parents’ bedroom. I saw my mother lying on the right side of the bed, on her side, facing the wall, under the covers. Then I remembered that she was dead, and I woke up.

In my second dream, I was in an office. The staff was gathered around me as I drew five concentric circles on the carpet. When the circles were complete, I rapped my knuckles on the center circle. We waited. Suddenly, we noticed that the circles became grooves in the carpet. I dug my fingers into the grooves around the smallest, central circle. I lifted out a circular section of carpet and wooden floor, leaving a small hole the size of a hand. I lifted the next ring out, and the next, and the next. As I lifted the final ring, through the opening now five feet across, light fell through the dark hollow beneath, a plunge that dropped as far as we could see, onto some wooden scaffolding, but without a visible bottom. One of the staff was frightened; he told me to put them back. I replaced the rings and closed the hole.

Wednesday, December 13, 2006: New Old Office, Firecrackers

I was assigned to a different office. The office was set up bullpen style, like an old newspaper office. My small gray metal desk was near a window. It was night outside. My window was above the city street, I am not sure how many stories up. I arranged several objects around my desk: a pair of brown leather cushions, a pair of green banana leaves, a pair of green glass and brass desklamps, a pair of gray metal desk fans.

Nearby was an eighteen-wheel truck. Several truck-drivers were gathered. One lit a string of firecrackers. They burst one by one, faster and faster, until all but a few exploded. One truck-driver picked up an unexploded firecracker. Suddenly, it went off in his hand. He looked at his hand, startled, then showed us, laughing: his hand was unharmed. My brother held up his hand, saying, “You’re lucky. I lost my pinky doing the same thing.”

Monday, October 30, 2006: Mail Bomb, Playing Bass Guitar

While working in a warehouse, I noticed an unusual package. I asked my co-workers about it, but they didn’t recognize it. Carefully, I unsealed and opened the cardboard box. Inside was a sealed gray plastic bag. Written on the bag was the word “DIE!” And the bag was ticking! I immediately threw the bag into a green metal trash dumpster, and ducked. There was a small explosion, and the sound of metal against metal. We looked in the dumpster and saw that the bomb had been full of metal ball bearings and other shrapnel.

In another dream, my wife and I were browsing around a music store. I saw a light blue six-string bass guitar. I picked it up and played four bar blues on it. The store manager came over and started chatting with me about the bass. He also mentioned that the store offered bass lessons.

Saturday, October 28, 2006: Road Trips, Pet Injured

A co-worker and I were driving down a long well-paved two-lane road. It was windy and raining. Apparently, the car was a convertible, but the top was so flimsy, I had to hold it down to keep it from flying off.

In another dream, I was in a chartered bus full of passengers. We were driving down the same road as the previous dream, but in the opposite direction. There were many obstacles on the road, some frighteningly difficult to navigate, including large patch of eroded road that threatened to swallow up the bus.

As we neared the end of our trip, we pulled over for a stretch. A passenger and I went for a walk with our dogs. We climbed down the embankment into a wooded area. We let our dogs wander far, but still on leashes. Suddenly, a blue car rolled down the embankment and struck our dogs. I don't know the condition of the other dog. My dog returned very slowly, as if he were injured. Indeed, when he approached me, his face appeared to be swollen. I immediately returned home, to take my dog to the vet. Before I left for the vet, I took my dog in our fenced-in back yard for a walk.

Thursday, October 26, 2006: Electronic Book, Old Co-Workers, Corrupt Church Leader

I designed a book with dynamic, hyperlinked text. It seemed to use electronic paper and ink. I flipped through the content, page by page, and clicked through other content with a stylus.

In another dream, I was in an off-white painted basement filled with pipes and machinery. Many of my former co-workers were there. We reminisced about when we worked together.

In the last dream, I witnessed a leader from the church I left hiding young boys in a closet. He didn’t know I saw this. Later, I found myself in a pharmacy, picking up a prescription. The leader was also there and sought to humiliate me. He announced to the entire store that my prostate medicine was ready. I said that it was to prevent cancer. I also said that I know a much worse secret of his, and that he should keep his mouth shut in the future.

Tuesday, October 24, 2006: Hard Times at Work

I sat in a meeting with two co-workers. The room was brightly lit, with white walls, a large table, and functional chairs. We were looking back on hard times the company had gone through, and how we had little choice but to remain loyal, given our family situations, the economy, and the job market.
