Monday, August 16, 2010: Soft Pretzel Present, Round Twin

He and his wife left their small apartment at night. He went ahead of her to find something. But it was too late to catch the bus. He returned to the apartment with a soft pretzel. It was their anniversary. He gave her the soft pretzel as a present. She loved it.

He walked in a strange hospital with his brother and his father. He entered a room with a twin of himself that was morbidly obese to the point of roundness. A group of orderlies surrounded him and bound this round him. They opened up the wall and rolled him away. He thought it was strange because he was still here.

Tuesday, July 20, 2010: Harrassed by Cat

He walked around a friend's apartment. Other friends were there, too. The friend's cat harassed him and his friends, biting and clawing them.

Friday, July 09, 2010: Magic Carpet, Sunken Bridge

He hovered in the air, seated cross-legged on a small rectangular carpet, no larger than two feet by three feet. His small dog sat on his lap. There was another person nearby, seated on a similar carpet. It was night. They flew near two brick buildings and streetlights.

When day came, they flew towards Lake Quinsigamond. They saw that Lake Quinsigamond was overflowing its banks. A section of bridge was completely submerged.

Thursday, June 17, 2010: Seeking Shelter

From a wide picture window, they saw the circulation of clouds forming into a tornado. He, his wife, his two children, his friend, and his dog descended three flights of stairs, into the cellar. The cellar was partially submerged in water. Despite the water, the dog was able to swim and keep up. They exited the cellar, moving quickly towards a metal bunker.

Thursday, April 08, 2010: Black and White Cat

He found himself in an apartment that was not his own. There were many other people in the apartment. He moved from the kitchen into the living room.

A black and white cat began harassing him: scratching him, biting him, trying to climb up his clothes.

He asked the cat, "Are you hungry?" and tried to bring the cat over to his food dish in the kitchen. But instead, the cat continued to harass him.

His dog appeared, and the cat began to harass both of them. He tried to keep the cat and dog separated.

For a brief moment, the cat turned into a middle-aged Hispanic woman. She spoke in English on a cell phone. Then she turned back into a cat and resumed harassing them.

Finally, he picked up his dog and escaped outside.

His wife was there.

They sat together under a gazebo. Suddenly, black and white birds flew down, then black and white cats with wings flew down; then rabbits and other small animals with wings flew down.

"Look at them!" he laughed.

Wednesday, March 25, 2009: Truck driving, white apartment

He was driving a UPS truck at night on very narrow streets. The brakes did not work. He downshifted and turned and turned, until he made a safe crash into a post.

He was living in an apartment with his friends. Everything was white: white furniture, white drapes, white floors, white walls.

Sunday, August 03, 2008: Out the window

He steadied a ladder-desk-shelf against a wide window overlooking a city street from several stories above the pavement. Then the shelf moved, and its contents began to slide towards the open window. He braced the shelf with his arms and legs. With a free hand, he grabbed the mouse, but came away with only the cord. The laptop fell out the window to the pavement below.

Tuesday, May 13, 2008: Spiders

He walked head-first through a mass of spider webs, while dragging a heavy object out of a small tin-roofed shed. But he did not pause or panic, and finished dragging the object outside.

The day was sunny and the sky was blue with a few small drifting white clouds. He examine himself: he was covered with spider webs. He shook and pulled thick strands of sticky webbing from his hair and arms and clothing. Small white spiders were crawling on him; he brushed them off.

He lifted the heavy object again and brought it to the corner of Pilgrim and Hamilton, to a yard sale. Now and again, he would find another spider crawling on him. He left the yard sale to clean himself off.

He went into a large house. In his suite, he found some fresh clothes and a towel, and he prepared to take a shower. He paused as he spied a young woman through a crack in a door that led into an adjacent room. She sat down at a table to eat breakfast.

Monday, May 05, 2008: Treading water, college dorms

They clung to the balconies of tall buildings for as long as they could. But eventually, the waters rose above the buildings, and they were forced to tread water. He and some others began to swim towards what appeared to be an island in the distance, but somebody warned them that carnivorous fish circled that island. So they turned back and swam in a different direction.

In a different dream, he was returning to college. He arrived early with a few belongings: some clothes, notebooks of poetry, a few books. He and the early arrivals chose a spacious, attractive, clean dorm near the front of the building on the first floor.

Then the late arrivals came. And a voice of authority forced him and the other early arrivals out of the dorm and rush back to try and claim a space. It was not fair, he thought, gathering up his possessions again. He and the others had lost the nice dorm, and were forced upstairs to less attractive, less clean dorms further from the building entrance.

He grabbed a clean towel from a co-ed shower, trying to be as discrete as possible.

He noticed that an older student was on the student roster, which sounded promising.

A witch met him along the way. She gave him her business card and exited as he waved goodbye to her.

Finally, he found an empty bed in a crowded dorm on one of the uppermost floors, full of loud frat boys. He put his possessions down and threw himself on the bed.

Saturday, April 26, 2008: Tornado, waking dream, father

He stood in a high apartment with others. Through a center window, he saw a tornado form from the underside of a hovering rectangle. He pointed it out to the others, and warned them. Suddenly, all was swept away by the tornado. He kept his eyes closed, but he could feel himself carried away by the wind.

Suddenly, he woke up, and he was lying in a bed. His father lay on his right next to him, holding him by the shoulder, shaking him awake and keeping him from falling off of the bed. “Where did you come from?” he asked. “I was tired, so I decided to lay down here. You were having a bad dream, so I woke you up.”

Sunday, February 03, 2008: Dorm

I had a dream that I was living in a dorm in a high-rise building. The dorm had three bedrooms and three bathrooms and no windows. In order to enter and exit the floor our doom was on, I had to ascend or descend many escalators that passed through a department store.

One of my roommates reminded me of a French Pee-Wee Herman. He had a large collection of stuffed animals.

We were hanging around in the dorm lounge. Michael Jackson was there. He said not to get him started on his nose.

Between our high-rise and the city was a large wilderness area. A student guide showed us (my wife and I) through the wilderness once. But when we were returning without our guide, we got lost. We waded through high brush until I spied a road.

I was sitting in on a SNL episode. Mitt Romney was performing a song while playing guitar. But he could neither sing nor play guitar. He covered this up by feigning that he was retuning the guitar. I tried to help by playing some chords on my guitar. But Mitt Romney and the host shifted the blame to me and kicked me off the set.

Finally, I dreamed about a porch with a tree growing up through it. Squirrels were building a nest in the branches, and bees were building a hive.

Friday, January 25, 2008: Basement apartment, great white cat, man who was a dragon

My wife and I were sleeping in a basement apartment. A friend of our son came knocking at the window, to invite him to play basketball. I said through the window that he was not up yet.

We got out of bed and walked outside. There was a long row of garage doors for parking cars and tenant storage. I spotted a very large white feline. It was trying to get back into a pet carrier that the animal outgrew. A woman came over to the cat and was walking it like a pet. But it was obviously an albino great cat and not a house cat. This made us worry.

We turned around and there was an airplane terminal, letting passengers off.

In a different dream, I found myself in an expansive gray room, filled with strange metal furniture. A man who was a dragon slowly pursued me around the room. Sometimes, I would distract him by drawing his attention to a particularly fine piece of furniture. I cast spells at him and kept my distance until at last, right before he was upon me, he fell and vanished.

Sunday, January 20, 2008: Between floors

We were living in a brownstone apartment building. I found a door that opened between the first and second floors to a half floor. The ceiling was only four feet from the floor. I explored the space for a little while, gathered up a few things, and exited through a door on the other side. I turned to look back, and the door and the space had grown smaller. I thought that I would not be able to return that way.

Sunday, December 23, 2007: Small white room

I sat on the hardwood floor in a large room in a luxury apartment. Under a dining table, I saw a hole in the floor. I could see people sitting in the apartment below.

I crawled on the floor into a white room. The room was smaller than the others, and lit from the outside. As I reached around the room, I felt cobwebs brushing my arms. This made me feel uncomfortable, so I crawled out of the room.

I stood up, got dressed, and rolled a bicycle down the hall; I was off to a new job, and I did not want to be late.

In February, I had a similar dream.

Wednesday, December 12, 2007: Tornado

I had a dream that I was walking around inside an apartment on the third floor of a three story building, similar to my childhood home. The walls were covered in cheap wood paneling, and the doors were not sturdy. My mother and father were there, and possibly my siblings, other relatives, and my wife and children. I could see through the window that the sky was cloudy. Somebody said that a tornado was coming. I picked up our dog, and we scrambled for the exit, to get into the cellar before the tornado hit.

Tuesday, July 31, 2007: Beige Apartment, White Stairs

I had a dream that I was walking the halls of an apartment complex. The walls were brick uniformly painted beige. A couple called out to my friend William to join them, and I think he did join them. My remembrance of the dream at this point overlaps. I was living in an apartment here, a long narrow closet; I was no longer living in the apartment, and I was standing outside looking at the door.

In the second dream I had, I was outside, descending a steep white stair under the stars. I was surrounded by sophisticates on platforms along the stair, wearing ball gowns and tuxedos. The descent was so steep that I had to put down my possessions and climb down on my hands and knees. I met an old friend of mine, Garland, at the bottom of the stair.

Tuesday, June 26, 2007: Falling, Eating a Frog, Catching an Crocodile

I stood on the roof of a tall white apartment building. After looking over the edge, I stepped off. With my back to the white plastic siding, I fell five stories down. Yet I landed on my feet unharmed.

I was at a picnic. Between thumb and forefinger, I plucked up a live frog from my plate. I put its rubbery leg in my mouth and bit its leg off at the joint.

Down by a river, I caught a crocodile with a hook and line, baited with a fish. I lifted the reptile out of the water. It thrashed and snapped its teeth at my hand.

Thursday, March 15, 2007: Scolding

My wife and I were living in my childhood home, a 3rd floor apartment. An old friend Stewart was there, and another person I cannot recall. We got into an argument, but I quickly became speechless. At some point, Stewart called me a hypocrite. Shelby spoke up for me, saying exactly what I was going to say. We escorted Stewart and the other person to the back porch, where they departed down the mint green stairway.

Wednesday, December 20, 2006: Bad Street, Bad Plumbing, Bad Dream

I walked down Cohassett Street, early in the morning. The pavement was in a state of disrepair. Much of the street was merely exposed earth. A sewer access pipe jutted out of the pavement, a dangerous obstacle to any car. I saw a bus stop sign on the right side of the street, and thought to myself, “I have never seen a bus travel down this road before.”

I crossed the road and entered a brick apartment building; this was apparently our new home. My wife and I were inspecting it. The rooms were spacious, with ceilings at least twelve feet high, and even wider and longer. But the plumbing in this building was bad. One pipe broke in my hands as I examined it. Others pipes were leaking, some pouring out a copious quantity of water. I said to my wife to call a plumber while I was at work, and have him fix all of the plumbing, no matter what the cost.

In the last dream I had, I dreamed that I was in bed, having a bad dream. I spoke to my wife in my sleep, asking her to wake me up.

Saturday, December 02, 2006: White Room of Cats, Apartment

I was living in a large house. I explored the basement. I found some strangely shaped heat radiators. After that, I found a golden curtained glass wall. I opened the curtain. Beyond the curtain was a white room. I marvelled that I found a white room here. As I peered into the room, I saw that there was a glass wall on the other side, and a door that opened to a lawn. At least a dozen cats came into the room. I thought to myself, “How am I going to get rid of all of these cats?”

I had a dream that I was in a bookstore with some friends: Bob, William, and William's father.

I had a dream that I was moving very quickly along a road, with a view of grass, trees, streams, and ponds.

Finally, I had a dream that my family was living in a third floor apartment. We found that the second floor apartment was unoccupied, so we explored it. The walls were covered with brown paper. The walls themselves, in some places, were very soft, as if they had nothing beneath them but insulation material. In the kitchen were large heating vents.

We went to a bank to take out a mortgage. The bank agent was a middle-age woman with brown hair and glasses. As we were talking to her, I wondered why we were taking out a mortgage on an apartment.

Sunday, November 12, 2006: School Party, Two Dogs, Cartoons

I found myself in a brick school building, with other children; I was a child myself. There were remnants of a party all around us: empty cups and trays of pastries. I gathered a plate of cookies and a cinnamon bun for myself. I think it was a celebration of a school reopening.

In another dream, my wife and I were living in a brick apartment. We had two strange dogs under our care, one large and one small. I got out of bed and opened a door to a balcony. The dogs took this as an opportunity to escape. They jumped off the balcony. I looked down, several stories, and they landed without harm. Other dogs were gathering in the street. The big dog and the small dog approached these other dogs. At first, I felt concerned for them. Then I remembered that these were not my dogs, and that I didn't care what happened to them, beyond simple humaneness. I closed the door, happy to be rid of the dogs.

I vaguely recall dreaming about a living cartoon creature, like a koosh ball with legs. Its name was Norubunga.

Saturday, November 11, 2006: Depressed Neighborhood, Waterfront, and Finally, Vermont

I walked in an unfamiliar neighborhood at night. The apartment buildings around me were crumbling apart. The few people I saw wore shabby clothes. Numerous large dogs roamed the streets, and I imagined they converged upon me. I stood in a playground that was used as a dumping ground instead. I climbed between a jungle gym and a stack of miscellaneous construction debris, to escape the dogs. I was high above the ground.

In another dream, my wife and I were living in a house that was built next to the ocean. This made me very nervous. I moved from window to window, searching for any sign of weakness in the house. It was day, so I could see that the foundation was stone. The house was covered with white aluminum siding. The tide appeared to be rising, and the waves rolled into our foundation higher and higher, but never reached above the foundation.

There you have it, two of my phobias: deep bodies of water and large dogs.

The house itself, from the outside, resembles our own house, which has a gray stone foundation and white aluminum siding.

In my last dream, my wife and I had arrived in Vermont, on vacation. It was night. We were in downtown Burlington. We walked along Church Street and Main Street, and on the nearby college campus. The streets and shops were bustling with activity, people of all ages and walks of life. We wondered aloud what we should do first. Half-joking, half-seriously, we both replied that we should look for jobs.

My wife and I are going on a vacation to Vermont soon. Vermont is a dream to us.

Wednesday, October 18, 2006: Kramer Annoyed

Kramer, from the television show Seinfeld, seemed annoyed with me. As I wandered around his apartment, observing the cornucopia of his bizarre acquisitions and inventions, another man entered the apartment, and annoyed him more. I took this as an opportunity to make amends, and made a positive comment about the blueprint hanging on the wall. Kramer’s attitude towards me immediately lightened. He said that he wanted to be an architect. The blueprint resembled a layout of my childhood home.

More Seinfeld dreams!

I had a repetitive data entry dream, where I was entering numerous elements of a dream taxonomy into my laptop.

When I engage in repetitive activities while awake, I often dream about them. This past week, I have been backfilling the database behind this site with past dreams, as well as tagging them appropriately.

The Black Balloon of Lost Dreams

During the night, as I started to wake up, I realized that I was waking up, and dreamed that my memories of my prior dreams were swallowed up in a black balloon, floating away from me into darkness as I flailed blindly after its tether.

Again, I am having difficulty with dream recall. I think I am trying too hard.

Wednesday, September 28, 2005: Leaky Bathtub

We moved into an apartment on Grafton Street, much like my parents’ previous residence, and we were selling our house.

I got out of bed to get ready for work. I went to the bathroom. As I began to run the water to take a bath, I witnessed all of the water run out of the tub. I examined the tub and found that it was badly damaged, with gaping holes in it. I told my wife and children about this, and said that the house wasn’t sold yet, and we still had time to move back if we wanted.

Monday, September 26, 2005: Missing Stairs

I had a dream that we were living in our old apartment on Northampton Street. I opened the front hall door. A girl was selling cookies. She was at the bottom of the stairs; I was at the top. Looking down, I saw that there were many steps missing, and that the hall window was much larger than I remember.

Friday, September 10, 2004: Waking Dream, Younger Brother, Elderly Sleepers, Bus

I was sleeping next to my wife, but the bedroom looked different. It reminded me of when we had to live in my parents’ basement.

In another dream, I was trying to get downstairs from an upper floor of a large apartment building. I saw my younger brother (which I do not have in real life) studying medicine. I found a chaotic back porch, with mazes of railings, stairs, and piles of junk. After I got past those obstacles, I came upon a dark room filled with old people sleeping on mattresses on the floor. “Does anybody know they’re living like this?” I thought to myself.

In my last dream, my house had a huge garage. I pressed a button and opened the massive garage door. A city bus pulled into the garage. A mechanic began to tune up the bus. My father and brother were with me. I asked the mechanic if the buses are going back into service. He said, “It looks like they are.”

The buses have been on strike for two months. Ugh.

Tuesday, August 03, 2004: Apartments

I was standing across the street from a pair of three-story apartments, sitting on an open plain. The apartments had flat roofs and were constructed, if you had a bird’s-eye view, to resemble the letter W. The house on the left was yellow; the house on the right was white. By way of color, position, and height, the apartment on the right resembled my childhood home on Dartmouth Street, and the apartment on the left resembled... the apartment to the left of my childhood home. Because the apartments were on an open plain, I felt nervous about approaching tornados, though there wasn't a cloud in sight.

A woman was selling the yellow house. It seems I had already bought the white house. “If I had the money,” I thought, “I would buy both houses.”

As I examined the house, I discovered that the basement ceiling was very low, and I was able to move the floorboards overhead. The upper interior of the house had a wide open space with heavy, movable wrought-iron stairs, platforms, and even stranger structures, one of which I think was a folding cube.

My father, brother, uncles, and my father’s (now deceased) dog were in the house. As Bandit, my father’s dead dog approached me, I felt apprehensive, because I knew that, in real life, the dog was dead.

In another dream I had, I was in a hotel bed. I had a cold. My nose was very runny. I blew my nose frequently and put the tissues on the floor next to the bed. Steve (Jack Davenport) and Susan (Sarah Alexander) from the BBC TV show Coupling were in the bed next to me, arguing.

I had a dream that I was living in a first-floor studio of an apartment complex. A young black man outside my window was complaining about how loud my music was.

I had a dream that I was reading RPG review online, something that I was doing frequently last night.

Finally, in the last dream I remember, I was talking to a small latino boy and his family. He had a black pet that could talk, though I can’t remember if it was a cat or a dog.
