Saturday, May 17, 2008: Fighting a dragon and a stranger
They assembled within a strong building of brick and steel; still, it had large windows and doors. This place was like a fortress for them. And from inside this fortress, they defended themselves from the attack of a dragon. This dragon had scales of green and gold, a wide mouth of long white teeth, large round nostrils; and this is the part they could see, for the head of the dragon was too big to fit inside the building. One of their number could fly through the air and fought off the dragon with power of will.
In a different dream, he found himself on a city street at night. His parents pulled up to the curb in a car. A stranger holding a hollow steel rod started to threaten him. To defend himself from the stranger, he lied down on the sidewalk, under a structure of strong glass and metal. When the stranger tried to prod him from under this structure, he grasped the end of the rod and pried it from the grip of the stranger. He came out from under the structure, and drove the stranger away.
Sunday, April 27, 2008: Hunter
He walked along ancient roads, through cities of long past, seeking out men and women whose passions and ambitions and the worship from others had crystallized in them something more than human. They had become gods, haunting cyclopean palace chambers; striding and strutting, demanding and destroying; beautiful, graceful, intellectual, powerful beyond human possession, and entirely mad.
He was nobody.
He saw through their wondrous and terrible mien, which flowed like fire and water and gold and sky. He broke through the spell that put men under their sway, and brought their reigns to an end.
He pursued one of them through darkness along a red path: a road, a river, a rivulet of molten earth. There was a break in the path. He leaped the gap towards his foe and landed in a stream. The stream cooled him and he broke the surface.
But his foe had eluded him. A stone fish lay on the shore of an unfamiliar sunlit villa. He walked into the villa, searching for a native to ask directions. Over a low wall, he saw a young woman. She wore a short red diaphanous dress. Her hair was red gold curls gathered up to bare her long slender neck. He approached her. There was nothing imperfect about her. She appeared to him coy but receptive. But he realized the great, great temptation she represented, and he woke himself up.
Wednesday, March 12, 2008: Missiles, Ladders
I had a dream that missiles were flying, one by one, across a dark sky. The first missile fell on a distant target, the second a closer target, the third a closer target. I took cover, prone on gravel, between a concrete barricade and two cars, both shiny classic vehicles, one blue and the other orange.
In the next dream, I was with my wife, one of her old roommates, possibly others. We were in vast, dark, concrete building full of black ladders and conveyor belts. I had a stack of red books with me that I carried up a ladder. Somebody mentioned a lever (pronouncing it leh-vur); I jokingly corrected them and pronounced it lee-vur.
A common element in both dreams was the knowledge that I could travel between worlds, and that the first dream was one world and the second dream was another world.
Thursday, February 07, 2008: Fighting a dragon, dog injured and healed, suicide
Together, we were fighting a monster in a dark place. The monster was lit with flickering blue and violet flames.
During the fight, I found my dog, injured on the ground. His jaw was broken; he was in pain. I took a towel and wrapped him in it to carry him off to a vet. But I looked down in the towel, and he was completely healthy.
I was in a parking lot at night with several coworkers. I was standing with one coworker talking. Suddenly, as we looked beyond a fence, a woman jumped from a high brick building and died; I recognized her as yet another coworker. We were shocked and saddened.
Tuesday, December 11, 2007: Mission, Aging Friend, Pavement
In my first dream, I was with a group of agents. We were on a mission. The enemy had discovered us. They sent large guided slow moving bombs after us. They were round, black, with tail-fins, at least ten feet in diameter, and floating slowly through the air.
I climbed a brick building and ducked inside through a door. I ran down wood-paneled halls, escalators, and stairs, past some people. As I approached the exit, I saw a camera. I had a cane in my hand. I tapped the back of the camera with the cane, and something turned off. I met with my fellow agents at the glass doors.
In the second dream I had, I was hanging out with an old friend Bob. We were looking through his comics and gaming books, all wrapped in plastic. He seemed more worn out than I remember.
In the last dream I had, I exited my house. I walked down the driveway. As I reached the end of the driveway, I noticed that a section of my fence was rusted and pushed in, as if a vehicle had struck it. I stepped out of my yard and walked towards the section of fence to inspect it. Then I noticed that there were no houses or trees or anything around my house, as far as my eye could see, only pavement.
Wednesday, November 07, 2007: Faerie Tale
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess (played by Zooey Deschanel). Every day, she would take a long walk through the woods near her castle. As she walked down the woodland path, she would pass a high stone wall. She thought little of the wall, no more than the other walls that marked property boundaries.
But this wall was different. This wall marked the boundary between the world of the princess, and the Dreaming, the world of faeries.
One day, Mad King Jack, the self-proclaimed king of the Dreaming (played by Johnny Depp) was sitting atop the wall. The princess passed, but she did not see him. Immediately, he fell in love with her. But being mad, he had no idea what to do.
So the next day, before she passed, he took his belongings and scattered them everywhere, and some he threw over the wall. His two helpers (played by Horatio Sanz and Maya Rudolph) would write the name of the king and other flattering things on all of these objects.
When the princess walked through the woods on this day, she found a ball with the name of the king on it. A helper, who sat atop the wall, told the princess that King Jack has lost all of his possessions, and asked if she would help find them.
The princess agreed to help. After searching the woods, she found many of the king’s belonging, and tossed each over the wall to the helpers.
The helpers said that the king has also lost some objects on the other side of the wall, and showed her to a gap in the wall, where she might enter, and help them find the rest of the king’s possessions.
When she crossed the gap, she saw the beauty of the Dreaming, and she also saw Mad King Jack. She, too, fell in love, and decided that she would stay with the king forever.
“Thank goodness,” said a helper. “Do you know how hard it is to write ‘Huge Dong’ on a slice of bologna?”
Then, the two helpers stuck out their tongues at each other, slapped each others tongues repeatedly, and nestled down in a bed of leaves to play Nintendo.
By far, one of the best dreams I’ve had in a long time!
Sunday, August 05, 2007: Downhill Race
I was outside my house, walking my silky terrier. The sky was overcast, and there were piles of brown leaves on the ground. The fence surrounding my house was rusted and broken; one section was closed off with a propped-up wooden fence. I chased my dog around the back of the house, and the properties of my neighbors had changed. There was a lot of grass, trees, and shrubs; also, an entire apartment had vanished. An old friend of mine, Stewart, was sitting on the grass, petting a cat. In another yard, a young brunette woman in a black dress was speaking to a person I could not see.
I started walking down my street. I found myself moving down the city streets on foot, other times by bus, sometimes with wuxia-style leaps through the air, and once, through a pizza parlor, but always downhill, faster and faster.
As I picked up speed, I also acquired followers. My sister, my mother, my aunts, my grandmother, eventually bystanders. We were speeding towards White City, a shopping center across a bridge. At the height of speed, I grabbed onto the hips of a roller-blading young blonde woman in a white bikini and zoomed off.
Monday, February 12, 2007: Another Bicycle Dream
A narrator was discussing the new ultralight and sleek bicycle that I was riding. As others tried to pursue me, by foot, by bike, and by car, I outpaced them at every turn. I rode next to a fenced median. With my left hand, I grabbed the top of the fence. I lifted myself and the bike over the fence to the other side of the road without stopping.
Saturday, October 28, 2006: Road Trips, Pet Injured
A co-worker and I were driving down a long well-paved two-lane road. It was windy and raining. Apparently, the car was a convertible, but the top was so flimsy, I had to hold it down to keep it from flying off.
In another dream, I was in a chartered bus full of passengers. We were driving down the same road as the previous dream, but in the opposite direction. There were many obstacles on the road, some frighteningly difficult to navigate, including large patch of eroded road that threatened to swallow up the bus.
As we neared the end of our trip, we pulled over for a stretch. A passenger and I went for a walk with our dogs. We climbed down the embankment into a wooded area. We let our dogs wander far, but still on leashes. Suddenly, a blue car rolled down the embankment and struck our dogs. I don't know the condition of the other dog. My dog returned very slowly, as if he were injured. Indeed, when he approached me, his face appeared to be swollen. I immediately returned home, to take my dog to the vet. Before I left for the vet, I took my dog in our fenced-in back yard for a walk.
Friday, October 27, 2006: Old Man
Under an overcast sky, I walked down a sidewalk. To my right was a road. To my left stretched a wrought-iron fence, and beyond the fence, a park with well-manicured grass and maple trees, still green. Leaning against the wrought-iron fence was an old man. I could hear him thinking out loud, “I wish everybody would leave me alone so I could just die.”
Saturday, October 14, 2006: Intruder, Egyptian Studies, Carnival
There was a homicidal maniac in our house. My wife, my son, my daughter, and I were simultaneously trying to catch him, drive him out of our house, and run away from him. When we finally drove him out, we celebrated by having ice cream sundaes.
After the sundaes, I helped my daughter with her history report on Ancient Egypt, while my son and wife watched television.
We brought in a contractor to go over the repairs that would be necessary before we sold our house. It was going to cost a lot of money, but it was worth it, because our property value had skyrocketed.
Then we walked down Park Ave, near Elm Park. A carnival filled the park and even the adjacent street. Apparently, games where you use small catapults to fling waffles, pies, tacos, and other foods at hungry targets were de rigeur. We walked on the other side of this game, along a wooden fence where some foods had sailed over the targets. We had to wade through a pile of waffles.
Tuesday, September 14, 2004: Leak, Dogs
It was raining outside. There was a leak under the sink. I checked the leak and it started gushing. All of the wood in the pantry became saturated with water. It was so soft, it gave under a little foot pressure.
I had a dream that I was preaching to a crowd of dogs. I was quoting scripture from a dog bible.
In the last dream, I was taking my dog for a walk, outside of the fence around our house. A gang of roaming dogs approached. I picked up Pippin to protect him from the dogs, and made my way back to the house.
Saturday, August 07, 2004: Church Corruption, High School Reunion, Home
Several people I used to go to church were gathered in a large white room with a curving, sloping floor, much like the floors of modern movie theatres. While I was there, I saw two old friends of mine, Ray and Ginger. Ray was playing with a circular saw blade. He tossed it at Ginger, playfully, lightly even, but the blade stuck into her head like a shuriken. Both of them were very surprised and panicking at the dilemma.
In another dream, I was in a church leader’s house. It was luxurious inside, a mansion. Everything was white and pristine. There was a fireplace burning and the air conditioner was running, which I thought was a little extravagant and wasteful.
In another part of the dream, there was pornography and sexual acts being performed in plain sight. In one place, it was in the dimly lit theatre. In another place, it was in the leader’s mansion. There was a strange, demonic presence inciting the people to these acts.
In a different dream, I was at a high school class reunion. I was happy to see so many old friends. I was wearing new clothes. I had a roll of money in my left hand, at least fifty $20 bills. Somebody said, “Wow, that's a lot of money.” I tried to stuff the money into my pocket, but it bulged revealingly.
Ok, let's not get all Freudian here.
Finally, I had a dream that my home was complete. Arbor vitaes lined the perimeter. The fence had hedge privacy slats. The driveway was red brick. The red cottage-style roof was finished. Inside, the house was furnished with all of the pieces we imagined, including a red leather loveseat and the Alien metal coffee table.
Friday, August 06, 2004: Fence, Carousel, Email
The fence on the side of my house was finished, as it is in real life, only instead of the fence-posts being embedded directly into the ground, they were embedded in concrete road barriers. As I was inspecting it, a rubbish removal truck pulled into my neighbor’s driveway, adjacent to my fence, and pushed the fence up against the house. This made me feel angry.
In my mind and in real life, I do wish to keep a boundary between myself and the neighbor who continues to push against my boundaries.
Next, I had a dream that I was exploring the basement of my house. The basement stairs were different. They were wider and almost completely obstructed by debris. The stairs led to a corridor that was dimly lit by bulbs that hung overhead. The walls were painted yellow. Immediately on the right, at the bottom of the stairs, was a small room, with a sink and toilet. I continued down the corridor and turned left, pushing through thick cobwebs. I came upon a large room full of junk. There were dirty windows on the other side of the room. I could also see a corridor exiting the room opposite the way I entered. In the room was a carousel, with all of the horses removed. One wooden horse stood off to one side. As I stood upon the round platform, it began to spin. I stepped off the platform and thought, “This must somehow connect into the rest of my basement.”
In the last dream I remember, my boss called me and asked me if I had finished any of the work he had sent me to do by email. “No,” I said, “because I am on vacation.”
Actually, I was on vacation. I did receive some emails from my boss, but, since I was on vacation and the emails were not urgent, I put them off until next week.
